World Communion Sunday and Rev. David’s Installation

DCC and FCCC congregations and friends are invited to join in a wonderful day of celebrations.  On Sunday we will begin the day’s events by celebrating the Lord’s Supper with special emphasis on World Communion Sunday.  Although Disciples churches typically take communion weekly, not every church or denomination does.  However on Sunday we have the opportunity to celebrate and remember with a world of Christians the life, death and resurrection of Jesus.  Furthermore we have the opportunity to spend some time thinking about what this event means to us on an individual basis.  What does it mean to receive and offer to others the body and blood of Christ?  Through this symbolic act we acknowledge what Jesus did for us, His presence in our lives, His grace and mercy freely given and His promise of Eternal life for those who would receive Him.  Moreover Jesus commands us to go out from beyond the walls of our buildings and share this gospel message with others and as a part of this, to offer the bread and cup, His body and blood given for many.

The second event of the day is the installation service.  Although I’ve been serving at DCC for last six months we intentionally postponed this special day.  As you remember when you extended the “call” to me and my family we had a lot in the works…like preparing for Garrisons birth and making some major transitions.  And just a short time after arriving at DCC all of us began a four month reconstruction/renovation project.  The long and short of it is we’ve all had a lot on our plate.  As we began planning this event we’d talked about combining this special service with Garrison’s dedication, but it was too much for us and the church.  And we’d thought about having a special Sunday that emphasized the installation and renovations and having an open house inviting Bright Beginnings families and staff and the various groups that use our building…but as with many projects the dates of completion were as wide and varied as you can imagine.  Ultimately we decided that October 4th would be the best day to celebrate our life together as brothers and sisters in Christ, a part of not just DCC and FCCC congregations but as family members, part of the larger Body of Christ.  So it is that we’ll gather together and celebrate both special events this Sunday October 4

DCC & FCCC congregations are invited to Rev. David’s Installation Service on Sunday, October 4 at 10:30 am.   There will be special music, special prayers, and words of commitment from Rev. Nordyke and from the congregation.  Please plan on attending this important and meaningful worship service in the life of Disciples Christian Church as well as the Nordyke family.  There will be a number of guest participants assisting in worship.

A BBQ potluck and reception will take place immediately after worship.  Please bring a dish to share.  Everyone is invited!

How Archaeology
Reshapes Christian Origins

Bernard Brandon Scott & Milton C. Moreland

ILLUSTRATED LECTURE

Milton C. Moreland
Archaeology and Faith

Do the Dead Sea Scrolls, James Ossuary, Da Vinci Code, Bible Code, and Jesus family tomb destroy or vindicate the proverbial pillars of Christianity? Some journalists and scholars have coated the silent artifacts with a theological veneer. When the veneer is wiped away, what does archaeology have to say about the historical Jesus and the origins of Christianity?

Friday, 7:30–9 P.M.

WORKSHOPS

Brandon Scott & Milton Moreland

Archaeology and Texts from Roman Galilee
What impact did the new Roman cities of Sepphoris and Tiberias in Galilee have on Jesus? We will explore the latest archaeological excavations and discuss how the artifacts have contributed to our understanding of the historical Jesus.  Then we will turn to the sayings of Jesus and read them in this historical context. What, for example, did the Lord's Prayer mean in a first-century Galilean village?

Saturday, 9:30 A.M.-NOON

Paul in the Aegean Cities
Paul and other early Christians formed small groups in grand Greek and Roman cities like Ephesus, Thessaloniki and Corinth. Through archaeology we will explore what the social and religious environment was like in these Aegean cities. We will then read selections from Paul’s letters and explore how his message might have been heard by people in these cities.

Saturday, 1:30–4 P.M.

Milton C. Moreland (Ph.D., Claremont Graduate University) is Associate Professor of Religious Studies and co-director of the Program in Archaeology at Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee. He is the Archaeology Senior Staff & Area Supervisor for the ongoing excavation at Sepphoris in Galilee. His publications include articles on Roman period Galilee and Jerusalem and two edited books on the sayings of Jesus.

Bernard Brandon Scott (Ph.D., Vanderbilt University) is the Darbeth Distinguished Professor of New Testament at the Phillips Theological Seminary, Tulsa, OK. He is the author of several books, including Hear Then the Parable (1989) and Re-Imagine the World (2002), and editor of Funk on Parables (2007).
