D. Newell Williams, President and Professor of Modern and American Church History, Brite Divinity School

Presented by:  Stalcup School of Theology for the Laity, Brite Divinity School

Acton United Methodist Church, 3433 Fall Creek Highway, Granbury, 76049 (For directions visit http://www.actonumc.org/)

Christianity is a historical faith.  It had its beginnings in history and has been shaped by historical developments.  This one-day seminar will provide an overview of the History of Christianity with special attention to spirituality, the development of the New Testament, the Reformation, eighteenth and nineteenth century revivals, and contemporary issues facing the church in North America.

Before assuming his present positions at Brite Divinity School in 2003, Dr. Williams taught Church History at Christian Theological Seminary (1984-2003), where he also served as Vice-President and Dean (1992-1998).  He is widely published and a sought after speaker.  Completing in 2009 a two-year term as Moderator of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), he is currently working with historians of other denominations on a world history of the Stone-Campbell Movement.

Registration is $35 and includes a light lunch.  (Scholarships available)

Relief Nursery Update & Volunteer Search

Our "Plano Fun Ride" event was successful.  We are grateful to many sponsors, but also to the Sullivan's who lent us some supplies for the day.

We have now started providing respite care one morning a week (for new and existing clients) at New Heritage Church in Allen.  We also are providing respite care one morning a week for clients at the Samaritan Inn in McKinney

By the end of this month, we will have parent education classes running and we are preparing to re-open our therapeutic preschool classrooms two mornings a week in a new location in Plano.

We are also seeking volunteers to assist a teacher during  Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday morning classrooms or Monday evening childcare during the parent education classes. If childcare is not your strength, but you wanted to help our mission, we are also seeking people to help our board with fundraising events.

Thanks for all of your support! If you have questions, want to ask for assistance, or wish to learn about volunteering, please call our new number, 972-517-6308.

Thank you! Laura Young, Early Childhood Specialist, Relief Nursery of Collin County

How Archaeology
Reshapes Christian Origins

Bernard Brandon Scott & Milton C. Moreland

ILLUSTRATED LECTURE

Milton C. Moreland
Archaeology and Faith

Do the Dead Sea Scrolls, James Ossuary, Da Vinci Code, Bible Code, and Jesus family tomb destroy or vindicate the proverbial pillars of Christianity? Some journalists and scholars have coated the silent artifacts with a theological veneer. When the veneer is wiped away, what does archaeology have to say about the historical Jesus and the origins of Christianity?

Friday, 7:30–9 P.M.

WORKSHOPS

Brandon Scott & Milton Moreland

Archaeology and Texts from Roman Galilee
What impact did the new Roman cities of Sepphoris and Tiberias in Galilee have on Jesus? We will explore the latest archaeological excavations and discuss how the artifacts have contributed to our understanding of the historical Jesus.  Then we will turn to the sayings of Jesus and read them in this historical context. What, for example, did the Lord's Prayer mean in a first-century Galilean village?

Saturday, 9:30 A.M.-NOON

Paul in the Aegean Cities
Paul and other early Christians formed small groups in grand Greek and Roman cities like Ephesus, Thessaloniki and Corinth. Through archaeology we will explore what the social and religious environment was like in these Aegean cities. We will then read selections from Paul’s letters and explore how his message might have been heard by people in these cities.

Saturday, 1:30–4 P.M.

Milton C. Moreland (Ph.D., Claremont Graduate University) is Associate Professor of Religious Studies and co-director of the Program in Archaeology at Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee. He is the Archaeology Senior Staff & Area Supervisor for the ongoing excavation at Sepphoris in Galilee. His publications include articles on Roman period Galilee and Jerusalem and two edited books on the sayings of Jesus.

Bernard Brandon Scott (Ph.D., Vanderbilt University) is the Darbeth Distinguished Professor of New Testament at the Phillips Theological Seminary, Tulsa, OK. He is the author of several books, including Hear Then the Parable (1989) and Re-Imagine the World (2002), and editor of Funk on Parables (2007).

DCC & FCCC congregations are invited to Rev. David’s Installation Service on Sunday, October 4.  We plan on having worship in the sanctuary that day since the restoration work is complete.  With this Saturday’s workday to spiffy up some miscellaneous items, the downstairs area should also be ready for all to see and use!

A BBQ reception will take place immediately after worship.  Please bring a dish to share.  Everyone is invited!

Disciples Women’s Reading Group

The Disciple Women of DCC will be meeting on Tuesday, October 13, to discuss the book THE RED TENT by Anita Diamant.  Plan now to join us at
