A Message for Rev. David

Kristina and I were so excited to see our family this past week and hated to see them go.  Once again we were reminded that moving is never easy.  It doesn’t matter whether you’re moving across the street or moving to the other side of town or moving to a new state or even moving to another country.  It’s hard and if anyone ever said its easy they’re kidding themselves.  When moves occur it means stepping out of the familiar into the unknown.  Moving requires that we navigate our life in and through and around changes and even some obstacles that aren’t always easy.  Fortunately or unfortunately depending on how we view it, moves are inevitable.  Nearly everyone will move at some time during their life…and I think that most would admit to the difficulty and uncertainty involved.  However I also think that most of us would agree that moves and changes in our lives are made easier when we have the support of family and friends.

When Kristina and I said our farewells (goodbyes seem so permanent) to family and friends last March we didn’t really know what to expect of Plano or DCC.  Oh sure we had a wonderful driving tour of the area and met a handful of gracious people from DCC, but mostly it was unknown to us.  We wondered if we’d find our way around or if people would like us?  Would wondered if people would welcome a young family in the church complete with 2 crying babies or would they care that I would be going to seminary?  Well the list of worries and fears went on and on.  Ultimately it wasn’t easy and truth be told it probably won’t be.  However I have to say that our worries and fears were soon quelled as members and friends of DCC began to pour out onto us a love and kindness that we’d been praying to know and experience in our new setting.  Evidence of this has been felt time and again during the last four plus months including most recently at Garrison’s baby shower and dedication.  Words cannot rightly express appropriate thanks for the hard work that went into planning this very special weekend and for the cards, gifts and encouraging words you shared with us.  As well Kristina and I would like to say a special thank you for remembering Kyleigh during the dedication and for thinking of Kristina and me and making sure we don’t forget to date.

Again many thanks,

In Christ’s Love

David, Kristina, Kyleigh and Garrison

A Message of Thanks

“Disciples,

Thank you so much for donating and shopping for the items we needed for VBS this year.  That was so generous of you and we so greatly appreciate it.  As always, the kids love the snacks and I know our snack leader, Polly, appreciated all that you did to help her so much.  May God continue to bless your congregation.

In Christ’s service,

Shannon Grubbs & Allison Lau”

Relief Nursery

It seemed that a number of DCC members were unsure as to who and what the Relief Nursery of Collin County is and does.  In light of that, the following information was copied from their website in an effort to help us understand what all Laura Young and her dedicated group of peers do there.

“The mission of the RELIEF NURSERY of Collin County is to prevent the cycle of child abuse and neglect through early intervention that focuses on building successful and resilient children, strengthening parents and preserving families. We serve multi-stressed families with young children, who are at-risk for child abuse and neglect.

We have a unique opportunity to raise the quality of life for our “at-risk” families.  The Relief Nursery program will strengthen the family and prevent child abuse – all under one roof – through a combination of a therapeutic early childhood classroom, while addressing the needs of the entire family.

Home visits are part of the program that builds a trusting relationship between the classroom teacher and the family.  Other program components include the providing of nutritional meals while in attendance at the facility, parent education classes, a “clothes closet,” mental health assessment, and substance abuse intervention support – all under one roof.

Parents will be following an individualized case plan based on their unique needs.  The goal is to empower each family with the capabilities to build a positive environment in which to raise their family.

Travis and Collin Counties are piloting the replication of the Relief Nursery program in the Sate of Texas, strengthening families and preventing child abuse and neglect.”

Unfortunately, the need for the Relief Nursery in Collin County is very real.

If you have further questions about Relief Nursery, Laura Young will be happy to speak to you!

August Young at Heart

This month’s Young at Heart dinner will take place on Thursday, August 20 at Tia Juanita's, which is located at the southwest corner of Parker and Alma next to Super Cuts hair salon.  The event starts at 6:30 pm.  Please let John Prewitt know if you’ll be attending at 972-612-7301.

DCC Office

Rev. David and Jan Carter will be out of the DCC office a bit this September for some R & R.

Jan will be out of the office on vacation to attend her niece’s wedding in California and then visit the wine country in No. California from September 10 – 19.  She’ll be back in the office on Monday, September 21.

Rev. David is also planning on being out of the office for a few days in September.  Those dates will be published when they are confirmed.

Worship Questionnaire

The Worship Committee has developed a questionnaire that they would like the DCC congregation to respond to.  Copies of the questionnaire will be in Fellowship Hall this Sunday, August 16 for members and visitors to pick up.  Your feedback will help the committee to determine in what ways the worship service could be made more meaningful.  Thank you for your suggestions.
