A Message from Rev. Nordyke

Just a few days from now people throughout the United States and American outposts abroad will celebrate America’s independence.  For many people July 4th is a time to gather with family and friends.  It’s a day to enjoy burgers on the grill, homemade potato salad, watermelon, slow churned ice cream and apple pie.  More than that, July 4th evening is a time in which young and old alike can be entranced by the awesome displays of beautifully colored lights that fill the sky and the sounds that fill the air.

Several years ago when I worked as news photojournalist I was assigned to cover a July 4th event called Firefall.  Located on the northwestern side of Springfield Missouri near the airport, Firefall comprised probably two hundred of acres filled with food vendors, games for the kids, every kind of live music and entrainment and thousands of people who would file in by the Buss, RV, truck or car load.  This was without a doubt one of Springfield’s biggest events.

Situated in the middle of open farm land, Firefall was usually blistering (okay, maybe it didn’t get as hot there as it does here, but it was hot nonetheless).  My job was to help with live shots or prepare video to be used during the evening news casts.  As well I was to get video of people simply enjoying themselves.  What a hard job, not!  Almost everyone I turned people were delighted to see me, well, perhaps they were intrigued by the large camera on my shoulder or maybe they were secretly hoping to get on TV, in any case they provided great video.

It was a great day and the fireworks coordinated along with the Springfield symphony were amazing.  Still by the end of the day everyone was hot and tried and completely worn out.  After spending hours at the event itself we would spend another hour or two just trying to leave the event.  As I reflect back to that July 4th, some twelve years ago, I’m reminded that what I saw and video taped that day more than the maze of cars or the entertainers, or even the fireworks themselves, were the people.  Moms and dads, brothers and sisters, aunts and uncles, grandmas and grandpas and friends enjoying each others company, sharing a meal and having some laughs.  What I saw that day were hard working folks, everyday heroes, just like you and I who enjoyed the freedom that Firefall brought but more over the freedom and independence that our country ensured.

July 4th is a wonderful time to celebrate with family and friends, to indulge ourselves in some great food and to be taken a back by the sights and sounds of fireworks shows.  But just as I witnessed among the thousands of people at Firefall, July 4th gives us an opportunity to reacquaint ourselves with the men and women, the everyday heroes, soldiers, blue and white collar workers, stay at home parents, children and retirees who make up this great country and see that the freedom and independence we enjoy continues from one generation to the next.

May God bless us all,

Be safe this July 4th,

In Christ

David

Even though there won’t be VBS …

You are invited to come rock at "Crocodile Dock!"  Due to many factors, we have decided to join forces with FCC Plano this year, and they have graciously agreed to accommodate DCC and FCCC kids (preschool through grade 5).  Their Crocodile Dock VBS will take place August 3-7, from 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm.  Laura Young will be co-leading the opening and closing groups, so there will be at least one familiar face.  Other DCC members have offered their time as well.  Kids should wear clothes that are suitable for craft projects and active games.  Drop-off is between 6:15 and 6:30 pm at the FCC chapel (east end of the building, which is located at 813 E. 15th street).  Pick-up time is at 9 p.m. sharp.  Parents are welcome to come a bit early and enjoy the closing music.

Please register your children and grandchildren through the FCC website as soon as possible.

To register:

Go to fccplano.org and click "VBS 2009" at the top right of the page.

At the next page, under the Crocodile Dock logo, please click "participant registration" to fill out the forms required.  You can contact Shannon Grubbs with questions at 972-423-3260.

Come "rock the dock" with us! Thank you!
