“Embracing Birthdays”

by Rev. David

For many people, especially those 18 and under, birthdays are something we look forward to.  In some cases we wait all year just to have our favorite cake or meal, okay maybe we don’t wait all year but you get the idea.  Birthdays are often times filled with a sense of excitement or anticipation of special cards and tokens of appreciation usually given by family and friends.  For some people birthdays are a time of letting loose.  And some birthdays are a rite of passage.  In my case I reflect back on several birthdays like when I turned one and was suddenly able to do so many things like eating a homemade baseball mitt cake.  Or there was my 13th birthday celebrated with my closest friends.  Or there was my 16th which meant getting my driver’s license and first car, a 1967 Mercury Cougar.  Or my 18th which meant I could vote and fill out a selective service card and be wonderfully surprised by my family.  Or more recently my 30th which was filled with wonderful surprises including beautiful cards, homemade lasagna and of course my wife and kid(s).  Admittedly I missed celebrating this milestone birthday with family and friends from Missouri, still it was a great day and I felt much love and appreciation.  As for 40, 50 and beyond I can only hope they will be filled with much love and laughter.

Like it or not birthdays are just part of the journey, part of life.  We can choose to celebrate them or ignore them but either way they still come, year after year.  Truthfully, not all birthdays are easy.  Sometimes we spend them alone.  Sometimes people forget.  Sometime they fall on an awkward day.  And sometime they conjure up memories, emotions and feelings that we’d rather not have.  Still we can’t just pretend they don’t happen or sometimes we celebrate our birthday with others and sometimes we do it alone, either way it a day unique unto us.  It’s the day that God set apart to bring us into the world.  Hence it’s a day to be celebrated.  Yet many people especially those over 30 act as if they no longer celebrate one of the most precious possessions they have.

 Pentecost Offering  - May 31

Expanding the Table is this year’s theme for the Pentecost Offering. As the Christian Church (Disciples of the Christ), we welcome and embrace with the love of Christ, all who will come to the table. And our Christian table is constantly expanding and reaching beyond social and economic boundaries to extend our witness. New Church Ministry seeks to continue to expand the table to reach new mission fields, journey to new frontiers and touch more lives. Support for this special day offering is more crucial than ever.

New Direction, La Roca, Trees of Righteousness, and Coolwater Christian Church are a few of the churches that were started as a result of the New Church Movement. Today, New Church Ministry can proudly claim that 598 new churches have been formed since 2001. This is good news worth celebrating! Through these churches, this movement is reaching more than 40,000 Disciples and the list continues to grow. What is our goal? Disciples hope to start 1,000 new churches by 2020. By supporting the Pentecost Offering you are expanding the efforts of the New Church Movement.

Each year, the New Church Movement is supported primarily by funds raised by the annual Pentecost Offering. This special-day offering provides support for new church planter training, coaching, grants, meetings and additional services to support the New Church Movement of the Christian Church.

Importantly, half of the money collected through the Pentecost Offering remains in YOUR REGION. The other half represents New Church Ministry to benefit the wider church for recruitment, training and coaching of new church planters.  Please help New Church Ministry to continue expanding the table to reach more people by bringing God’s message to new places and new communities. By Expanding the Table, we share the witness of Christ. This year, Pentecost Offering will be on Sunday, May 24 and Sunday, May 31.

Ebby Halliday to speak at Juliette Fowler Homes

An exciting event will be taking place at Juliette Fowler Homes on June 7.  Ebby Halliday will be on the campus sharing a bit about her life, along with Mike and Mary Poss.  Ebby is a member of Central Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Dallas.  Mike is the son of a Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) minister and he is the author of her biography.  Mike will also be here to share his experience in writing the book.

We will have books available for purchase, and Mike and Mary will also be available to autograph the copies.  They hope to have a nice crowd on hand to support these fellow Disciples and to show respect to Ebby Halliday for all that she has accomplished in her 96 years.

The event takes place in the Jackson Living Center, ARCO Dining Room, 1240 Abrams Rd., Dallas from 1:30 – 3:30 pm.  If you would like more information please call Karen Brown at 214-515-1340.

From the Techno Manor

Over the last year, Rev. Galen Clark mentioned to me a couple of times that I really should publish a book of my “From the TechnoManor” articles.  I would typically shuffle my feet, then hem and haw a bit for my response.

It’s not that I was ashamed of my articles.  My reluctance stemmed from knowing how hard it is to publish a book.  You see, I used to do that for a living.

From 1994 through 2001, I was a senior technical writer with Tandem Telecom that later became Compaq Telecom.  No, you won’t find my work on amazon.com.  It was proprietary, written for specialized equipment, and dry as dust.  It was the best non-prescription sleep aid you could find!

As a compromise, and a tip of the hat to Galen, I have set-up a page on the DCC Web site.  Here you can find my past articles by date or by topic.

Ok, so how do you find them?  Do the following:

·         Visit the DCC Web site at

www.dccplano.com

·         Click Resources in the menu on the upper left (you can do this from any page within the DCC Web site).

·         Click “From the TechnoManor” Archives.

·         Click on a date when the article appeared, or scroll down and click on a topic.  (The topics are in alphabetic order.).  A PDF file of the article will open.

·         You can view, save, or print the PDF file as you see fit.

 by date

by topic

Now you no longer have to print out each week’s “From the TechnoManor” and store it in a binder (I’ve heard some people do this).  They’re all at your fingertips.  This gives you another aid to deal with today’s rapidly-changing technologies.

The clock is ticking as I wind down my “From the TechnoManor” articles.  Got a technical question for me?  Drop me some email at:

            frenchygrey@gmail.com

I’ll answer one each week in The Link.
