Pentecost Offering—May 24 and 31

Expanding the Table is this year’s theme for the Pentecost Offering. As the Christian Church (Disciples of the Christ), we welcome and embrace with the love of Christ, all who will come to the table. And our Christian table is constantly expanding and reaching beyond social and economic boundaries to extend our witness. New Church Ministry seeks to continue to expand the table to reach new mission fields, journey to new frontiers and touch more lives. Support for this special day offering is more crucial than ever.

New Direction, La Roca, Trees of Righteousness, and Coolwater Christian Church are a few of the churches that were started as a result of the New Church Movement. Today, New Church Ministry can proudly claim that 598 new churches have been formed since 2001. This is good news worth celebrating! Through these churches, this movement is reaching more than 40,000 Disciples and the list continues to grow. What is our goal? Disciples hope to start 1,000 new churches by 2020. By supporting the Pentecost Offering you are expanding the efforts of the New Church Movement.

Each year, the New Church Movement is supported primarily by funds raised by the annual Pentecost Offering. This special-day offering provides support for new church planter training, coaching, grants, meetings and additional services to support the New Church Movement of the Christian Church.

Importantly, half of the money collected through the Pentecost Offering remains in YOUR REGION. The other half represents New Church Ministry to benefit the wider church for recruitment, training and coaching of new church planters.  Please help New Church Ministry to continue expanding the table to reach more people by bringing God’s message to new places and new communities. By Expanding the Table, we share the witness of Christ. This year, Pentecost Offering will be on Sunday, May 24 and Sunday, May 31.

From the TechnoManor

“Coming soon…to a computer near you…Windows 7!”

Ok, you may not see this as a headline.  However, beginning this Christmas Season (and maybe even this fall), new Windows PCs will include something called Windows 7.

What is it?

Windows 7 is Microsoft’s replacement operating system for Windows Vista on most PCs.  If you’re a Mac user, this won’t apply to you (you’ll be watching for MacOS 10.6, aka, Snow Leopard.)

I’ve been testing Windows 7 since February.  Microsoft offered two test versions (called the Beta and Release Candidate) for free to anyone who wanted to download and install them on a computer.  The drawbacks to doing this:  some things may not work, and these test versions will stop working in 2010 (so, don’t install them on your regular computer).

However, running the test versions of Windows 7 has been very educational.

My overall opinion?  I like it.

Microsoft learned many (painful) lessons from Windows Vista.  In Windows 7: they have simplified things, made it easier to find programs and options, and actually sped up how the computer responds.  In short, Windows 7 just works.

I installed both test versions on my test computer:  a vintage 2003 Dell laptop.  Windows 7 responds remarkably well.  It breathed life into my old Dell.  In some of my recent articles, when I needed to figure out how Vista works, I’ve actually used Windows 7 to teach me.

If you’ve gotten used to using Windows Vista, you will be comfortable using Windows 7.

Should you rush out and buy Windows 7 when it appears on amazon.com?  Nope.

Unless you’re a “gear head” like me, you should only buy a new operating system with a new computer.  Upgrading a computer from an older operating system is possible, but life is to short to deal with such things.  Besides, if your current computer is satisfying your technical needs, stick with it.

Having said that, if you’re in the market for a new computer, you might want to wait until later in the year to buy.  Retailers will be reducing prices to get rid of computers with Windows Vista installed, making room for computers with Windows 7.  Or you may want one of those shiny new computers with Windows 7!

And if you buy a new computer now, will you be entitled to a free upgrade to Windows 7?  Probably not.  However, it doesn’t hurt to ask.  You might get the retailer to shave a few dollars off the price because you know a new operating system is coming.

I’ll be ending my From the TechnoManor articles in a few weeks.  So, if you have been holding back any technical things that have been puzzling you, time is running out!  Send them to:

            frenchygrey@gmail.com

I’ll answer one each week in The Link.

Chancel Choir

May 24 (Sun.) Chancel Choir warms up 9-9:25 a.m. in the sanctuary ("Be Still and Know")

May 27 (Wed.) Chancel Choir rehearses 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. in the sanctuary

May 31 (Pentecost Sun.) Chancel Choir warms up 9-9:25 a.m. in the sanctuary ("Every Time I Feel the Spirit")

Handbell Choir is on summer break.  Thanks for a great year!  By the way, if we expanded from our current eight members up to twelve, we could ring the full three octaves of bells at DCC!  Just a thought for those DCC members who might be considering trying out ringing.
