A Note from Rev. Dave

It never ceases to amaze me at how quickly time passes.  A month ago today Kristina and I and a dozen or so of family and friends were racing the clock to pack up what I thought was a relatively small home.  Naively I figured we’d pick up the moving truck about 8 AM arrive by 9 and have the house packed and ready to hit the road by 12, maybe 1 PM at the latest.  I can almost hear some of you beginning to laugh because you’ve been there too.  Well to make a long story a little shorter, we did pick up the moving truck at 8 but that was the only thing that happened according to my schedule.  What was supposed to be a quick 3-4 hour project soon turned into 8 plus hours, not including the time spent gathering things from my office till 8:30 that same night.  By about 9:30 PM Wednesday, April 1st Kristina, Kyleigh and I made it to my parent’s house grabbed some pizza and began psyching ourselves up for one of the biggest transitions for our lives.

Four thirty the next morning came all too quickly, but tired and worn out we once again loaded up and began the 7 plus hour trip to Plano.  Really we couldn’t have asked for a better trip.  Kyleigh didn’t fuss until that evening when we hit rush hour in Plano.  The moving truck did fine once we figured out that the only way to eliminate the swaying motion on the freeway was to go 55 mph or under.  The car we hauled behind the moving truck did okay until we got into Plano heading toward our apartment and realized that a strap had come loose and watched the car bounce up a couple of times.  Overall things went smoothly and though we missed our apartment the first time, it wasn’t anything that a trip around the block couldn’t fix.

We had no idea what to expect, only that Donna Clancy had arranged to pick up our keys so we could get in.  When we finally arrived at the apartment we were touched by the donated air mattresses and the food that had been prepared and the outpouring of love that could already be felt.  Not to mention that Donna and Bob assured us that at 9:30 the next morning there’d be help and help we had.  Within a couple hours things were unloaded and boxes were being unpacked and of course there was plenty to eat.

All that said, Kristina and I want to express a heart felt thanks for your love and kindness.  We couldn’t have done it without your prayers, your affirming words, your brute strength and your delicious food; it was all welcomed and appreciated.  As we reflect back over the last month we can see that we are slowly but surely finding our way and as we look to the next month we anticipate another addition to our family and to our church family.

Thank you all,

In Christ’s Love

David, Kristina and Family

Time Flies!

Even though Easter was only a couple of Sundays ago, Vacation Bible School is just around the corner, or at least the planning for it is!  Pastor Dave will announce a meeting for all those interested in volunteering to help out with VBS and being part of the planning process.  Please prayerfully consider helping out this year.  It takes a lot of people and commitment and love to make it happen!

Holy Grounds Computers

Well, it finally happened:  someone has discovered our "secret cache" of Holy Grounds laptop computers!  Two of them are missing.  If you see a forlorn laptop computer lying around the church grounds, please gather it up and bring it to the church office.  If you have discovered our secret cache, please leave a note when you borrow a computer (so that we don't fret), and return the computer when you're finished.  Thanks!

Relief Nursery of Collin County Needs Your Help!

Dear Friends,

The Relief Nursery of Collin County is ready to open our second classroom!  We need two volunteers daily (with two teachers) to ensure that our classroom adult-to-child ratio allows maximum therapeutic benefit to the children.  Volunteers are highly valued and respected members of our classroom teams.  Background check/interview required.  Men and women ages 16 through retirement are invited to apply.  Experience with young children is a plus.  One 3.5 to 4-hour commitment per week for 10-12 weeks allows us to staff a room for a season.  Class times are Mon./Wed. and Tues./ Thurs. 9:30-a.m.-12:30 p.m.  Benefits include making a difference in children's lives, helping provide parents with a needed break and enjoying the laughter, play, and logic of young children.  Experience at RNCC can help you update your resumes or future job applications in teaching or social services fields and can count as service hours for students and scouts. Interested in joining us?  Please call the Relief Nursery of Collin County at 972-665-0298, or visit us on the web at reliefnurserycc.org.  Thank you!

Helpful Reminders

  • For those of you who have a loved one or friend listed on the prayer request (or who might in the future), please remember to provide the DCC office with updates as you get them.
  • Even though the attendance “counters” come up with a total attendance every Sunday, most of the time the number who sign the registration forms is less than half the number actually counted.  Please remember to sign the attendance sheet in the black book located in the pew in which you sit during worship.

2009 North Texas Area Annual Assembly

The annual Area Assembly will take place this Sunday, May 3 from 3 – 5 pm at Northway Christian Church.  The theme this year is “Community on Purpose, Community with Purpose.”  The guest preacher is Dani Loving-Cartwright, Regional Minister for the Southwest Region.  There will be special music and message with attendees from over 80 Disciples churches.  What a great way to learn what’s happening in the church beyond the local church!  Northway Church is located at 7202 W. Northwest Hwy., Dallas, 75225.

62nd Annual CMF Spring Retreat

Fliers are on the Welcome Table in the Atrium for those interested in learning more about the Tri-Area Christian Men’s Fellowship Spring Retreat.  It will take place at Disciples Crossing in Athens, TX, on May 15-17.  The cost is $75 and includes a golf tournament, music, games, and fellowship.

From The Techno Manor

Ever received a PowerPoint email attachment and discovered you couldn’t read it because you don’t have PowerPoint on your computer?

Well, you need the PowerPoint Viewer from Microsoft.  And it’s free.

The PowerPoint Viewer allows you to open PowerPoint files to watch the slide show.  You cannot change the slide show, only watch it.

If you’re interested, and you have a Windows computer, here’s what you do.

·         Open a Web browser.

·         Visit:  http://download.microsoft.com

·         Type powerpoint viewer in the Search All Download Center box and click the green magnifying glass.  See the following illustration:

·         In the Results list, click on PowerPoint Viewer 2007.  The PowerPoint Viewer 2007 download page appears.

·         Click the Download button.

If you’re using Internet Explorer…

If you’re using Firefox…

·         Click Run in the File Download – Security Warning dialog.  The installer program will download and run.

·         For Windows Vista:  Click Yes in the User Account Control dialog.

·         For Windows XP:  Click Run In the Internet Explorer - Security Warning dialog

·         Click Save File in the Opening PowerPointViewer.exe dialog.

·         When the download completes, double click PowerpointViewer.exe in the Downloads dialog.

·         Click OK to the Open Executable File dialog.

·         Click the Click here to accept the Microsoft Software License Terms box, and then click Continue.

·         The PowerPoint Viewer will take about a minute or so to install.

·         Click OK to The installation is complete dialog.

You can now use the PowerPoint Viewer to open PowerPoint slide show files.

The first time you use the PowerPoint Viewer, you’ll get the usual Microsoft licensing blather.  Click Accept when prompted.  You will never see this license annoyance again.

Now, when you receive a PowerPoint attachment to an email message, the attachment icon will appear as a PowerPoint symbol:

To view the attachment, click on the icon (some email programs require you to double-click).  The attachment will open and start the PowerPoint Viewer.  (You may have to click a button or two to convince Windows you really want to do this.)

The Viewer is very basic.  You press the space bar to advance to the next slide in the slide show.  If you right mouse click from within a slide show, you will see a simple menu listing the available choices:

If you save a PowerPoint attachment, double-clicking on the filename or icon will start the PowerPoint Viewer.

Mac Users Side Note:  There is a PowerPoint Viewer for the Mac.  Unfortunately, it is about six years old and is several versions of PowerPoint behind.  If you enter powerpoint viewer mac in the Search All Download Center box (see above), you can find it.  However, your mileage may vary.

It’s Wednesday morning and I’ve gotta wrap this up.  My greyhounds are getting restless.  Before they demand their walk, let me remind you to send your technical questions to my Inbox at:

I’ll answer one each week in The Link.
