Updated Prayer Requests

  • Walt Nilsen is home recovering after having a mild stroke early Easter morning.  The doctors feel he can be treated with medication for this.
  • Rev. Diane Clark will be seeing a surgeon about having the tumor on her kidney removed.  She is walking everyday and receives therapy three times/week.  She recently helped seal the deck and ramp at their home.  She does carry a cane.
  • Ron Cohen, Jan & Jerry Carter’s friend with pancreatic cancer is scheduled to have surgery on April 30 to remove the malignant tumor on his pancreas and aorta.

The prayer requests in The Link each week are recent updates. A list of ongoing prayer requests appears in our worship bulletin each Sunday.

A Note from Rev. Dave

Last week I shared that the resurrection of Christ is central to Easter and more importantly our lives giving us hope now and perhaps more importantly a promise in the life to come.  Jan Sullivan also mentioned the significance of giving or receiving gifts at Easter which is symbolic of Jesus’ greatest gift for us, His resurrection.  But where does that leave us?  The answer is pretty straightforward we’re given the responsibility to share this awesome gift with others.  How can we do this?  One way is to share the message of Christ in the way we live our lives.  This is important because most of us have contact with other people everyday.  Maybe it’s our neighbors, co-workers, classmates, friends, family, even the person at the checkout stand at the grocery store.  The point is that one of the ways we share the hope of Christ, the message of the resurrected Christ, is through our words and actions.  Think of it as living out the great commission in all we do, to be and share the good news of Jesus Christ in word and deed, “from our doorsteps to the ends of the earth.”  Or as the Apostle Paul might say, to “make the most of every opportunity….”

It sounds easy enough and yet things get in the way.  Things like our own disbelief or sin or not having a place to be encouraged and strengthened as a relationship with Christ is built and maintained.  The reality is that not everyone is entirely certain that they believe what they say they do.  Not to mention many people don’t feel worthy to share a message of hope and forgiveness.  And sadly there are few places where people are welcomed as they are and encouraged to become who God wants them to be.

Again, where does this leave us?  I think the idea is to continue to cultivate a community of Christ whose members recognize their own periods of disbelief and imperfection and allow others to do the same.  At the same time we have to maintain a community in which people are encouraged and expected to grow in their knowledge, understanding and belief in God and His son Jesus.  While the “church” and its members must always provide for the more obvious needs of people like food and water, shelter and clothing we mustn’t ever forget the importance of establishing and preserving a relationship with God the father through Jesus the son.

In Christ

Relief Nursery of Collin County Needs Your Help!

Dear Friends,

The Relief Nursery of Collin County is ready to open our second classroom!  We need two volunteers daily (with two teachers) to ensure that our classroom adult-to-child ratio allows maximum therapeutic benefit to the children.  Volunteers are highly valued and respected members of our classroom teams.  Background check/interview required.  Men and women ages 16 through retirement are invited to apply.  Experience with young children is a plus.  One 3.5 to 4-hour commitment per week for 10-12 weeks allows us to staff a room for a season.  Class times are Mon./Wed. and Tues./ Thurs. 9:30-a.m.-12:30 p.m.  Benefits include making a difference in children's lives, helping provide parents with a needed break and enjoying the laughter, play, and logic of young children.  Experience at RNCC can help you update your resumes or future job applications in teaching or social services fields and can count as service hours for students and scouts. Interested in joining us?  Please call the Relief Nursery of Collin County at 972-665-0298, or visit us on the web at reliefnurserycc.org.  Thank you!

From The TechnoManor

So, did you read the recent news about GhostNet?  Maybe not.  GhostNet is a network of compromised computers (i.e., computers infected with spyware) mostly in Southeast Asia.  It was discovered by some Canadian researchers who were examining computers belonging to the Dalai Lama’s support organizations.

You can read more about GhostNet at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghostnet.

How did these computers get infected?  Someone opened a Microsoft Word attachment to a piece of email.  The Word attachment was crafted in such a way to take advantage of bugs in Word.  These bugs allowed spyware to be deposited on the computer.  That spyware later “called home” to a master computer.  And away they went.

My points are

l        Be mindful about opening email attachments.  Only open attachments from people you know, and only open those attachments you’re expecting.

l        Keep your copies of Microsoft Office (that is, Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Powerpoint) updated.  That means install program fixes that Microsoft issues from time to time.

How do you keep your copies of Microsoft Office “fixed”?  The easiest way is to direct Automatic Updates to use the Microsoft Update web site.  Ok, I can see your eyes crossing.

Let me backtrack a little.  In my 2/19/2009 article, I explained how Microsoft keeps Windows fixed automatically using something called Automatic Updates.  Automatic Updates contacts a special Microsoft website called Windows Update.  Automatic Updates downloads and installs fixes for Windows, all behind the scenes.

Well, the other groups at Microsoft got the message:  use Automatic Updates to automatically fix all of Microsoft’s products.  So now Automatic Updates can install fixes for other products like Microsoft Office or Silverlight, in addition to Windows.  But there’s a catch.

The catch:  in Windows XP, you have to turn this on.  It’s automatically turned on in Windows Vista and Windows 7 (Windows 7 is the forthcoming successor to Vista).

So, how do you do this?  Do the following on your Windows XP computer:

·         Click Start.

·         Click Windows Update near the top of the Start menu.  Internet Explorer opens and goes to the Windows Update page.

(Note:  If Windows Update isn’t visible in the Start menu, click All Programs.  Windows Update should be at the top of the Programs menu.  Click Windows Update from the top of the Programs menu.  Internet Explorer will then open to the Windows Update page.)

·         On the Welcome to Windows Update page, click Go next to Get Microsoft Update Today.

·         Click Start Now to initiate the download process.

·         In the security warning dialog box, click Install.

·         Close Internet Explorer after Microsoft Update finishes installing.

Now, whenever Automatic Updates runs and updates Windows on “Patch Tuesday,” it will also install critical patches for Microsoft Office (and other Microsoft products).  There is nothing else for you to do.

Side Note:  if you use Microsoft Office for Mac, Microsoft Update will not work for you.  However, based on the Web site http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.mspx, there is an Office AutoUpdate for Mac built into Office for Mac.  So, it looks like your copy of Office will be automatically fixed as updates become available.

Now you can open Word attachments to email with some feeling of safety.  And you won’t become another node in the GhostNet.

I'll answer one question each week in The Link.  If my Inbox is empty, I'll have to turn to my greyhound, Woody, and ask him what I should write about.  Typically he responds by licking my nose.
