A Message from Rev. David

Wow, it’s hard to believe that this day is here.  It’s kind of a surreal experience, I mean, sitting in the pastor’s office of Disciples Christian Church looking out the window and seeing a world of new possibilities and dreams.  A year ago the only thing I knew for sure was that Brite Divinity School at Texas Christian University had extended an opportunity to attend seminary.  This sounds great until the reality of having a family and the responsibility of caring for their needs sets in.  Thus began the long journey of completing search and call papers and beginning conversations with several people in the Dallas/Fort Worth area.  In retrospect I know that God was teaching Kristina and me a lot about being faithful to the call and the direction He was placing on our lives and more so being patient through the process.  Unfortunately having patience isn’t always easy.  When an opportunity arises we’re tempted to jump in instead of waiting until the timing is just right.  This is when we would do well to remember that we don’t live our lives on our time frame but God’s.  Although it’s been a long process getting here we believe that God has heard us and has answered our prayers through the opportunity Disciples Christian Church has given us.  We look forward to serving you and getting to know each of you better as well as the events and programs that make Disciples Christian a special church to be apart of.

A special thanks to all who helped make this transition possible from the search committee and members of the congregation, to your transitional ministers and their words of encouragement and direction to those assisting with securing our apartment, unloading the moving truck and making sure our bellies were full through the process and to everyone for giving my family and me such a warm welcome.

Thanks,

In Christ

David, Kristina and family

On a side note, my office hours will be Monday through Thursday 9-3 unless I’m visiting with someone or away at a meeting or in Labor and Delivery with Kristina and Kyleigh.  These hours should be constant through the summer until the fall semester at Brite begins at which time I will post new office hours.  Please feel free to call or come by anytime.

Right Naborly

Dear friends at DCC,

It was my privilege to be back serving you again as interim minister, even for a short time.  What a joy it has been to renew connections with you dear brothers and sisters in Christ.  Thank you for your many kindnesses.   Thank you, thank you, too, for the wonderful “goodbye” basket of fruit and goodies and the lovely card.  We are enjoying the treats and smiling as we think of you.

Oran and I have been so grateful for your care, prayers and support during his long wait for surgery and in his recovery.  He is now at home, and the stabbing nerve pain that so debilitated him is gone.  We trust that the post-surgery pain will gradually diminish as well.

Let me take one more opportunity to encourage you to attend the Living Last Supper at First Christian Plano tonight (April 9) at 7:30 p.m. and then the Good Friday Service tomorrow (April 10) at 7:30 in our sanctuary.  Rev. Nordyke and I are sharing leadership in that service.  It will include the very meaningful extinguishing of candles as we hear the Passion Account in the Gospel of Mark.

Finally, I want to be sure you know you have a wonderful staff.  Take every opportunity to thank them for their ministries.  I wish every church could have an administrative assistant as delightful, efficient, dedicated and Christ-centered as Jan Carter; she keeps the church going and gets things done with great graciousness.  Laura Young loves serving God through music and it shows.  She spends a great deal of time, energy and creativity preparing for worship, working with the various vocal and instrumental musicians.  What dedication!  It can be easy to overlook the important work of the organist/pianist for a worship service.  In fact, their preparation is essential in carrying the worship service and Julie Chen knows that.  She has a gracious spirit and is ready to do whatever is needed.  Linda Gulick is amazing with her gifts for teaching children and organizing a pre-school program.  DCC should be proud of Bright Beginnings Pre-school; children who go through that program are not only ready for kindergarten but also have a good Christian foundation along with the experience of living harmoniously in a diverse community.  Dave Gillen is a genius with technology, especially computers.  With a great sense of humor and a willing spirit, he keeps the church up and running with the technology needed in both the worship service and the office, all the while offering simple, even amusing explanations for those of us not very smart.

You have a great staff, which now includes Rev. David Nordyke.  I expect to hear that Disciples is thriving and dynamic and doing great things for God.

 Blessings,

Charlotte

Relief Nursery of Collin County Needs Your Help!

Dear Friends,

The Relief Nursery of Collin County is ready to open our second classroom!  We need two volunteers daily (with two teachers) to ensure that our classroom adult-to-child ratio allows maximum therapeutic benefit to the children.  Volunteers are highly valued and respected members of our classroom teams.  Background check/interview required.  Men and women ages 16 through retirement are invited to apply.  Experience with young children is a plus.  One 3.5 to 4-hour commitment per week for 10-12 weeks allows us to staff a room for a season.  Class times are Mon./Wed. and Tues./ Thurs. 9:30-a.m.-12:30 p.m.  Benefits include making a difference in children's lives, helping provide parents with a needed break and enjoying the laughter, play, and logic of young children.  Experience at RNCC can help you update your resumes or future job applications in teaching or social services fields and can count as service hours for students and scouts. Interested in joining us?  Please call the Relief Nursery of Collin County at 972-665-0298, or visit us on the web at reliefnurserycc.org.  Thank you!

From The Techno Manor

I was talking with Rev. Nordyke before worship last Sunday.  He mentioned that he had brought some needed files with him on a jump drive.  I had to think for a moment about that phrase, but I realized what it was.  I simply hadn't heard that term in a while.

So, what is a jump drive, a thumb drive, a key drive, a USB drive, a flash drive, or a USB flash drive?  There are probably other names that I'm missing.

These are all names for small widgets, about the size of your thumb, that you plug into your computer to store files.  They're the successor to floppy disks as a way to move files around.  They work on all flavors of computer.  All your computer needs to use them is a USB port.

Here's an example of a USB drive:

I'm going to use the phrase USB drive for the remainder of this article.

So what are USB drives good for?  Well, here's a sampling:

  • You can put files on them from one computer, then pull the files off on another computer.  That's how we put the PowerPoint slide show on the AV computer in the Sanctuary.  Jan Carter puts the slide show on a small, silver USB drive using her computer.  We copy it to the AV computer on Sunday morning.
  • You can put important programs on it and use those programs on many computers.  I have a software “toolkit” on one.  When I visit clients and need a certain tool, I plug in my trusty USB drive and voila!
  • You can back up your important files on one.  (You do back up your files, right?)
  • You can put MP3 files on them and play them on your computer or certain MP3 players.  At this year's Irish Festival, one of the performers was selling his music on USB drives instead of CDs.  Quite clever.

Where do you get USB drives and how much do they cost?

You can buy them at the usual suspects for electronics:  Fry's, Radio Shack, Best Buy, Micro Center, Office Depot, Office Max, and Staples.  I've seen them at Target.  Sometimes they're used as giveaways or gifts (I'll bet you might even find one in a box of Cracker Jacks, but I'm probably dating myself.)

They cost anywhere from free to $150.00 for the largest ones (64 GB).  Typical prices are about $10.00 for a 2 GB model.

Cross-eyed alert:  If your eyes are glazing over when I say “2 GB”, check out Dave’s Anti-TechnoBabble Table in my 2/5/2009 article.

We’re looking at 2 of these things:

Here's some things you should know about USB drives:

  • They do wear out!  By that I mean, if you use them over and over again, they start to “forget” the information on them.  Typically were talking several years.  In technical terms, each memory location has a limited number of “write cycles” (in the 10,000 to 100,000 range).  So, use a USB drive for several years, then replace it.
  • They're great carriers of viruses and spyware.  Be cautious if you're receiving a gift USB drive or using one from someone you don't know well.
  • They can contain programs that automatically run.  This is a follow-on to the last item. Be mindful if you plug in your USB drive and see a dialog box similar to the following:

Always click Take no action then OK.  Don't run the program unless you are very familiar with what it's doing.  The entry Mount TrueCrypt volume here is actually a legitimate program I use.

  • They can easily be lost or stolen.  So, whatever you store on a USB drive, be sure it isn't something crucial to your life.
  • If you have a USB drive on your key chain (some people do), remember to remove it from your key chain before turning your keys over to someone else (such as a technician at your favorite car repair shop).  The car techs are known to read USB drives and copy the contents!

So consider adding a USB drive to your collection of stuff to make your computer experience less painful.  And did I mention they’re good for backing up your files?!?

As always, please send me your technical questions at:

            frenchygrey@gmail.com

I’ll answer one each week in The Link.  As you see, if I don’t get questions, any conversation might be material for one of my articles!
