Rev. Nordyke to Be Introduced on Palm Sunday

New pastor, Rev. David Nordyke, and his family will be introduced to the congregation at the beginning of worship on April 5.  Although his first full Sunday will be Easter, Rev. Nordyke will be a participant in the Palm Sunday Worship Service and in the Good Friday Service.

Plan to be here on Palm Sunday and bring friends to greet DCC’s new pastor.  Even more importantly, plan to be present to celebrate the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem and prepare for the last week of the journey toward Easter.

New Home for the Nordykes

Rev. David Nordyke and family will be moving into their new residence on Friday, April 3.  Their address will be 3800 Pebble Creek Ct., #613, Plano, 75023.  If it works with your schedule, DCC members are encouraged to help them get settled into their apartment, especially knowing that Kristina Nordyke is around seven months pregnant.  Start time is 9:30 a.m.  Food is being coordinated by Rebecca Nilsen and Patti Boyer.

 Updated Prayer Requests

  • Rev. Diane Clark’s knees are healing well and she is walking easily with the help of a walker.  She has been in the hospital while doctors are working on getting her pain meds straightened out.  They hope she will be able to come home this weekend.  Diane and Galen are thankful for family members who are close enough to be able to help out.
  • Gena Hurst’s brother, Brian, who has cancer, received a fairly good report recently.  He will get a second opinion on April 6 to decide the next treatment.
  • Oran Nabors will have surgery on his back on Tuesday, March 31.

The prayer requests in The Link each week are recent updates. A list of ongoing prayer requests appears in our worship bulletin each Sunday.

Right Naborly

Disciples Christian Church has called a new pastor, one with a fresh passion to serve God.  He has been the minister of a congregation he loves but must leave.  He and Kristina believe that he must continue his preparation for the Lord’s service by getting a seminary degree.  Brite Divinity School in Fort Worth clearly agrees; they have offered David a full scholarship.  So David will be both pastor and student (as well as husband and father).  The best way for him to learn and grow is by serving a congregation that is healthy, flexible and loving. Disciples Christian Church is such a place.

As your new pastor learns, stretches and tries on new understandings through his seminary education, Disciples Christian Church will benefit.  As you nurture David and provide a supportive learning environment for him, David will benefit.  What a gift God has given you both.  What a formative time you will share together. Cherish it

On Palm Sunday Rev. David Nordyke will be introduced to the congregation, along with his wife, Kristina and their daughter Kyleigh.  How very exciting!!  I am certain you will encourage and guide David and that you will support and pray for his whole family. I trust you will offer constructive comments, value his strengths and volunteer not only information but also your help.  I expect you will give him and the church your wisdom, your time, your commitment and your love.  God bless you, David and Disciples, as you move together into this important new time in your lives.

From The TechnoManor

Last Sunday, during the Offering Meditation, Sonny talked about sending email to jesus@god.god.  At least that’s what I thought he said.  It gave me an idea for this week’s article.

When we send email or use the Web, we use names like google.com, dccplano.com, or noaa.gov.  But what do those names mean and how do they get you where you want to go?

In order for information to reach a computer on the Internet, each computer is assigned an address, much like your house address.  This address is composed of 4 blocks of numbers and looks like this:

            74.125.159.104

That set of numbers looks pretty meaningless, right?  Yet it’s the unique address assigned to Google.

This set of numbers is called an Internet Protocol address or IP address for short.  You might see this address when you’re dealing with your own Internet connection, or a customer support person tells you to enter something like http://192.168.1.1.

Each computer that connects to the Internet, including yours, has a unique IP address.  No two computers can have the same IP address.  That’s one of the rules of the game.  Here are a few other rules:

  • There are a finite number of IP addresses.  Yes, we’re running out.  In the next few years, IP addresses will be longer and look a little different to handle the shortage.
  • An IP address can be static (it never changes), or dynamic (it changes periodically).  You have to lease a Static IP address from your Internet service provider (the church has one).  A Dynamic IP address changes each time your computer connects to the Internet.  Most computers typically have Dynamic IP addresses.
  • There are a handful of special IP address ranges that cannot appear on the global Internet.  These are used for private networks (such as your home, business, or an enterprise). You might see an IP address in one of these ranges from time to time.  Those ranges are:

10.0.0.0 – 10.255.255.255

172.16.0.0 – 172.31.255.255

192.168.0.0 – 192.168.255.255

To keep our eyes from crossing and make the Internet usable, a technology called domain names was developed.  Domain Names are human-readable names translated into IP addresses.  The translation is done automatically by your computer.

How does this happen?  (I promise to be brief.)  When your computer first powers up and connects to the Internet, it typically receives the IP addresses for two Domain Name System (or DNS) Servers.  These are special computers that know where to find other computers on the Internet that can translate domain names to IP addresses.  Why two?  So that at least one is available.  You must have access to a DNS server or else you can’t effectively use the Internet.

When you type http://www.dccplano.com into your Web browser, your computer looks inside and says, “OK, I need to contact the computer at 68.238.112.12 to tell me where www.dccplano.com lives.”  (68.238.112.12 is the IP address for a DNS server operated by Verizon.  This number may be different on your computer).  Your computer contacts the DNS server at 68.238.112.12.

The DNS server figures out the answer by asking a few other computer friends (the Domain Name System is a whole hierarchy of computers on the Internet).  It then sends the answer back to your computer saying, “You can find www.dccplano.com at IP address 204.15.176.7.”

Your computer then sends a message to 204.15.176.7 asking, “Please send me the home page for your Web site.”  The computer server at 204.15.176.7 sends back the church’s starting Web page and your Web browser displays it.

Let’s see if a picture helps.

Every time you use a domain name, this translation process occurs.  That could be in a Web browser, in email, or in other tools that use the Internet.  In addition, every Web page that you view has references inside that use domain names.  This same translation process is occurring for those references, too.  The translation process is designed to happen in a fraction of a second.  However, if a domain name doesn’t exist, you might see this message:

Where do domain names come from?  Anybody who wants to be reached on the Internet can get one.  The church has one (dccplano.com), I have one (frenchygrey.thatip.com).  You can have one, too!  But you only rent domain names, and that’s another topic.  However, if you’re interesting in getting a domain name, you might want to visit these Web sites to learn about prices and terms:

www.dotster.com                   (The church uses this site.)

www.godaddy.com

www.networksolutions.com

www.thatip.com                      (I use this site.)

And what happens if you try to reach jesus@god.god?  Well, I tried to check on the domain name using the simple ping network command:

C:\>ping god.god

Ping request could not find host god.god. Please check the name and try again.

I guess God hasn’t rented a domain name.  Gotta try “kneelmail” like Sonny suggested.

Got a technical question that’s been bugging you?  Send me email at:

            frenchygrey@gmail.com

I’ll answer one each week in The Link.  If I don’t get questions, I have to make things up.  And you don’t know who I’ll pick on!
