Disciples Christian Calls New Pastor

On March 8, 2009, Disciples Christian Church voted to call Rev. David Nordyke to be Senior Pastor.  David will begin his ministry with us on Easter Sunday.

David, his wife Kristina and daughter Kyleigh will be moving to Plano from Branson, MO where he has been Sr. Pastor of Branson First Christian Church for the past 5 years. They are anticipating the birth of their son due in May.  In late August David will begin studies at Brite Divinity School.

In the planning stage is a congregational lunch or dinner so we will be able to welcome the Nordykes prior to Easter Sunday.

Updated Prayer Requests

  • Rev. Diane Clark was hospitalized this week after becoming ill, they believe due to a change in her medications.  Before being released from the hospital Wednesday morning, another CAT scan of the abdomen revealed a growth/mass on the right kidney -- probably cancerous.  It seems to be contained.  Her physician is referring her to a specialist to check it out

The prayer requests in The Link each week are recent updates. A list of ongoing prayer requests appears in our worship bulletin each Sunday.

Right Naborly

It’s spring.  The weather is beautiful, and the earth is being renewed.  Yeah!  Now it is time for spring cleaning.  Yuk!  Traditionally Lent was a time for spring cleaning, the time to clean house from top to bottom, cleaning out winter’s dirt along with the soul’s dirt and beginning afresh.

So it is time for us all to do some spring cleaning, for body and soul, as well as for the house and God’s house.   The folk responsible for the church property have scheduled spring cleaning for God’s house.  Work day is scheduled for Saturday, March 28, -April 4 if the 28th is rainy.   The church looks pretty good.  Still there are always things to be done.  There are windows to be washed, corners to be dusted, shrubbery to be trimmed, grass to be mowed, paint to be touched up and things to be freshened.

Every once in a while we need to do a little extra cleaning; besides, company is coming.  The new minister, David, along with his wife Kristina and daughter Kyleigh, will be here soon.  And we expect there’ll be guests who come to check out the new minister.  (You are thinking of some people to invite, I hope.)  There will be other guests who come for especially to celebrate Easter.  (You are thinking of some people to invite, I hope.)

Plan ahead so that you are here with your cleaning rags on Workday and with your friends and guests on Easter. Be ready for fresh beginnings.

From The TechnoManor

Some friends asked me a question after worship last Sunday.  They sent a friend a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet via email.  Their friend was unable to open the spreadsheet.  They are using Excel 2007, but their friend was not.  What could they do?

Microsoft did some fiddling with the formats of files created by their Office 2007 suite (Excel, PowerPoint, and Word).  They created what they call the Open XML Format.  I’ll spare you the technobabble, although you can read about it under Useful References, below.  Suffice it to say, files you create in Office 2007, will not automatically work in Office 2000, Office XP, or Office 2003 (i.e., Excel, PowerPoint, or Word in those versions of Office).

If you are using Office 2007, you can tell if you've created one of these files by looking at the filename extension (in your email program) or the File Type (in Windows Explorer).  The following table shows you the differences between the old versions of Office (2000, XP, and 2003) and the new version of Office (2007).

Office Program

Filename Extension

File Type

Excel

Old extension:  .xls

Old Type:  Microsoft Excel Worksheet

New extension:  .xlsx

New Type:  Microsoft Office Excel 2007 Workbook
or:               Office Excel 2007 XML workbook

PowerPoint

Old extension:  .ppt

Old Type:  Microsoft PowerPoint Presentation

New extension: .pptx

New Type:  Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007 Presentation
or:               Office PowerPoint 2007 XML presentation

Word

Old extension:  doc

Old Type:  Microsoft Word Document

New extension:  .docx

New Type:  Microsoft Office Word 2007 document
or:               Office Word 2007 XML document

So, what can you do to remedy this?  Well, you have a couple of options.

Option 1:  Save files in the older format.

If you have Office 2007, you can save the files in the format used by the older versions of Office.  To do this, click File in the menu bar, then Save As.  Look at the bottom of the Save As dialog box.  You should see Save as type.

Click the down arrow at the right of the field.  This will present you with a list of choices.  Scroll up or down to find the format for the older version of Office.  In the example above, we’re saving a Word document that can be used by Word 97, Word 2000, Word XP, and Word 2003.

If you’re saving a file for older versions of Excel or PowerPoint, look for something similar.

Option 2:  Install a converter program

Microsoft provides a converter program that can be installed on your computer if you have older versions of Office (such as 2000, XP, or 2003).  This converter program integrates with the older version of Office.  It allows you to open files created by Office 2007 programs, and to save files in Office 2007 formats.

As usual, Microsoft does not give this program an easy name to remember!  You are going to download and install the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats.

You download this from:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=941b3470-3ae9-4aee-8f43-c6bb74cd1466&displaylang=en

Or start at:                    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/924074

This Web page gives you the background you need for updating your existing versions of Office in preparation for downloading and installing the Compatibility Pack.  It’s also shorter to type.

The “Microsoft mumble” may seem daunting, but the process for downloading and installing the Compatibility Pack is fairly quick and painless.  And you don’t have to restart Windows, either!

After you install the Compatibility Pack, when you double-click on a file created by Office 2007, it will open the correct program (Excel, PowerPoint, or Word).  You can then save the file in the format for your version of Office, or save it as an Office 2007 format.

I hope this helps you, and my friends at church who asked me about this issue.  Knowing about the change in Microsoft Office should make sharing documents a little easier.
