Disciples Christian Calls New Pastor

On March 8, 2009, Disciples Christian Church voted to call Rev. David Nordyke to be Senior Pastor.  David will begin his ministry with us on Easter Sunday.

David, his wife Kristina and daughter Kyleigh will be moving to Plano from Branson, MO where he has been Sr. Pastor of Branson First Christian Church for the past 5 years. They are anticipating the birth of their son due in May.  In late August David will begin studies at Brite Divinity School.

In the planning stage is a congregational lunch or dinner so we will be able to welcome the Nordykes prior to Easter Sunday.

Updated Prayer Requests

  • Ron Cohen, Jan & Jerry Carter’s friend with pancreatic cancer, is experiencing pain but doctors feel that overall he is responding favorably to radiation treatments.

The prayer requests in The Link each week are recent updates. A list of ongoing prayer requests appears in our worship bulletin each Sunday.

Right Naborly

It is an exciting time.  In last Sunday’s congregational meeting you voted to call David Nordyke as your new pastor.  He is a capable and committed young man, who will continue to grow in ministry as he both serves Disciples Christian and does his seminary studies.  It is an exciting time and there is hope for the future of this church.  I’m sure there have been days that this congregation, like many other small struggling congregations, has felt the weight of declining membership, the pain of the young families who go to another church for more children’s and youth programming, the concern over aging membership, the discouragement of the volunteers.  I’m sure there are times when you must have wondered if this church is dying.

Now I sense, in the calling of a young pastor who is committed to serve this church for next several years, a collective sigh of relief and a fresh perspective on the church’s future.  But you can’t let down now; this is just beginning. The truth is that, while the leadership of a pastor plays a very important role in the vitality of a church, it also takes the support, energy, spiritual commitment and outlook of all the church members.   The choices that together the congregation and pastor make will determine whether the church is dying or whether it will grow and be alive in faith and witness.

Let me recommend a small book called I Refuse to Lead a Dying Church.  In it, author Paul Nixon, Methodist pastor of a growing church, outlines six critical choices that will impact us as Christians and the church.  For those of us who refuse to lead or live in a dying church, here are his six choices:

            Choosing life over death,

            Choosing community over isolation,

            Choosing bold over mild,

            Choosing fun over drudgery,

            Choosing frontier over fortress,

            Choosing now rather than later.

It is my prayer that that Disciples Christian Church will choose to do that which is life-giving, which flings open the doors of the church to others, which brings fun and the joy of life together as Christians, which strengthens the bond you are to have as the faith community, which reaches out with forward-looking possibilities rather than staying walled in to the past.  It is my prayer you will do it now and do it boldly.  It is my prayer that Disciples will be known as a vital congregation where lives are graced and transformed by the power of Christ.

A Personal Word

from Rev. Nabors

March 8, 2009 was designated Global Day of Prayer for Burma (I refuse to call it by Myanmar, a name given it by its tyrannical military junta.).  Here at DCC, our thoughts were fixed on more local matters, such as the calling of a new pastor and the sharing of chocolates.  The Global Day of Prayer has now passed; many people didn’t even think of Burma last Sunday.  But I did and I want to share the concerns.

Our family has a number of deep connections to the situation with Burmese refugees and the horrible atrocities being perpetrated on their people by the Burmese army.   The army particularly focuses on those who are ethnic-minority, who support democracy and/or who are Christian.  Whole villages are burned; males are forced to serve as porters for the Burmese army and when worn out, are left to die.  Women and children are raped.  People get limbs blown off by land mines.  Thousands flee for their lives and become internally displaced persons.  Others have had to flee to Thailand.  Some of our dear friends go into Burma and spend months training leaders and doctors in order to help, living out the gospel in a very real and dramatic way.  Others work on the Thai side.   They need our prayer support.

Right after Christmas, the Nabors family – fifteen of us - went to a large refugee camp outside of Mae Sot in Thailand, at the Burma border.    In a room full of Burmese Christians, we worshiped and sang Christmas carols.  We then enjoyed the nearly two hundred precious children who sang for us and acted out the Christmas story; they touched our hearts.  If I understood the pastor correctly, there are about sixty thousand refugees in that camp.  They need our prayer support.

In the face of it all, the faith and joy of these Christians can teach us all something in tough times.   If you want to learn more about the situation as you pray for them and learn from them, I invite you to check out the website for Global Day of Prayer for Burma, Christians Concerned for Burma or Free Burma Rangers.  I want to invite you to remember them in prayer even if March 8 has passed.

From The TechnoManor

Well, since I wrote last week's column, I've learned a few more things about TV on the Web.  I found this tip in my Inbox (thanks!):

“I like to keep up with my TV shows through http://abc.go.com/player/index?pn=index Some of the other networks have full episodes too, but most of the shows I like to keep up with are on ABC.”

That got me to thinking about the other major broadcast networks.  I overlooked them since I rarely watch television.

I did check out the ABC Web site.  You have to download a little program (called a plug-in) for your Web browser.  The process is quick and painless.

The other major broadcast networks also have Web sites.  They are:

www.cbs.com for CBS

www.nbc.com for NBC

www.fox.com for Fox Broadcasting

Each Web site has links to watch full episodes.  You watch the episode through your Web browser (typically Internet Explorer) in a postcard-sized window.  The window can often be expanded to the full size of your display.

Forgive me for missing other broadcast networks.  Like I said, I don’t watch much television.  You get the idea, though.  Search on Google for the Web site of your favorite broadcast network, or simply type http://www.yournetworklettershere.com in your Web browser.  (Most broadcast networks have obtained the rights to the Web address for their network to preserve their brand identity.)

A few things issues I observed when accessing the major broadcast network Web sites:

  • I was a little dismayed at how slowly some sites responded.  The sites are either very busy or the broadcast networks aren’t putting a lot of resources on their Web efforts.
  • Finding and starting the TV programs is about as easy as operating your TV remote.  Which means expect pain and confusion!  Simplicity is not in their vocabulary.
  • Not all TV programs are available to be watched on the Web.
  • Some sites claimed I had an ad blocker on my Web browser, which I don’t.  So, don’t be surprised if you get some peculiar messages.  You may have to fiddle with settings on your browser to placate the network masters.

I also learned about the Web site tidaltv.com from another volunteer at the Irish Festival.  I played with it...and got hooked watching old cartoons!

Despite the drawbacks, I still believe watching TV on the Web is one the waves of the future because:

  • You can watch programs on your schedule (witness my emailer’s tip, above).
  • You don’t have to be sitting in front of your TV at home.
  • You can watch old favorites that disappeared from the rerun airwaves (or are forgotten in your personal archives).

Once again, I made this week's article brief.  Now I’m recovering from last weekend’s North Texas Irish Festival.  I should be a little more animated next week.  So, how do you use technology?  Send me your questions or comments to:

            frenchygrey@gmail.com

I'll address one each week in The Link.
