Updated Prayer Requests
The prayer requests in The Link each week are recent
updates. A list of ongoing prayer requests appears in our worship bulletin each
Sunday.
Right Naborly
I sit in
front of the computer screen. In one room nearby I hear children singing
“Hot Potato, Hot Potato”; in another I hear Jan say in her cheery voice, “Good
morning. Disciples Christian Church. How
can I help you?” Out the window I see my blue Prius with the REVMOM
license plate parked again in the church’s lot. Periodically someone
comes in for a hug and a word of catch-up. It is good to be back at
Disciples Christian Church if only for a while. I’m quickly feeling right
at home.
I have
remembered with fondness our time with this congregation as transitional
pastors in 2005. In early January I agreed with Donna Clancy that I would
come again to be your transitional pastor. Since then we learned that the back pain my

I am
delighted at the opportunity to spend time with you and especially to be in
worship with you again.

Ministry Opportunities for Volunteers
The Department of Pastoral Care at Children's Medical
Center Dallas would like to extend an invitation to become part of its
Volunteer Ministry program. Children's offers its Pastoral Care volunteers
an opportunity to visit with patients and their families in non-critical areas
of the emergency room, the urgent-care clinic, and day surgery. These
three areas represent the greatest need for chaplain volunteers to supplement
the daily work of our full-time chaplains. Children’s has one of the
busiest pediatric emergency centers in the entire nation.
You need not be an ordained minister to participate, but
all volunteers must complete a 15-hour training course before they begin
serving as part of the Volunteer Ministry team. In addition, a continuing
education seminar led by senior staff chaplains is held monthly for all
chaplain volunteers.
The next training session is scheduled to begin on April 21
and will continue for four consecutive Tuesday evenings from 6-9 pm, ending May
19. Application packets (including participation requirements for all
hospital volunteers) may be obtained through Volunteer Services at
214-456-6388.
Application deadline for the spring training session is
Friday, March 6. For additional information about Volunteer Ministry, please contact
Children's Pastoral Care Department at (214) 456-2822.

have multiple stress factors. We are currently accepting

The TechnoManor
Ever
wonder where I get some of my information to answer your questions? But of course, I go to the Web.
And you can, too!
My first stop for answers to questions about Windows
computers is, surprisingly, Microsoft's Support Web site: support.microsoft.com. Let's visit there now...
Microsoft's Support Web site is the public face for
Microsoft's Knowledgebase. This is a
database for all of Microsoft's products.
It gives information about:
Let's enter slow computer into the Help and Support
search box....

The support Web site will suggest some possible choices
from its database. I can choose one of
these possible choices. However, I'll
stick with my original “slow computer” and click Search Site.
With a broad topic like “slow computer”, I can expect
hundreds or thousands of matches in the Knowledgebase. I'm not going to look at each one. In my experience, the information I'm looking
for tends to be within the first page or two.
I can whittle down the answers from the Knowledgebase by
picking the product or operating system in the Show Me column on the left. Let's narrow the search down by clicking Windows
Vista.

Scroll down the results listed on this page. Because “slow computer” is a broad topic,
there are many choices. Select one that
seems appropriate to your situation, such as Optimizing Microsoft Windows
Vista Performance. Read the
article. Yes, sometimes you'll get about
half way and go, “yuck, this doesn't help”.
But many times, the article will give you well-defined steps to perform
that do fix the problem.

If your eyes start glazing over as you read these articles,
you may want to call someone for help!
Another source I use is Microsoft's main web page: www.microsoft.com. The search box on the home page searches the
entire Microsoft Web site. This is
useful because it also searches various blogs and forums hosted by
Microsoft. Sometimes, important
information is posted casually (in a blog) or as a response to a person’s
question (in a forum). These areas are
not searched from the Help and Support page.

Here, I'm looking for information about Outlook
Connector Sync Issues (it's something new from Microsoft that I'm
experimenting with. It's quirky.) A useful tidbit is in the item Outlook Connector 0x80070057, One or more parameter values are inv in ...which comes
from one of the forums (aka communities).

So, where do I go if I strike out at Microsoft? Yup, on to Google (www.google.com). I've learned a few things when searching
Google for technical information.
Following are my observations:
slow computer
is far too broad and most likely
won’t give you useful answers. Try
instead
slow computer windows xp sp2
Finally, when I’m looking for a
tutorial or good explanation of a technical topic, I turn to Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org. I talked about some of Wikipedia’s
shortcomings in my November 6, 2008 column.
However, as a reference for technology, it’s excellent.
So, the next time you’ve got a
technical problem or issue, and you want an immediate answer, check out one of
the Web sites listed above. You may just
find what you’re looking for.
Of course, I still need your
questions! ‘cause
I like to do the digging on those Web sites.
If you’ve got one, email it to me at:
I’ll answer one each week in The Link. It’s an enjoyable thing to do on a rainy
afternoon.

MUSIC NOTES:
The Chancel
Choir is currently meeting in the sanctuary from 6:30-7:30 on Wednesday
evenings and 9-9:25 a.m. on Sunday mornings to warm up before worship. If your
New Year's resolution was to be more involved in the life of the church, while
having a lot of fun, come and try us out! If you enjoy singing, we can use you!
We have set a goal of needing to use all three rows of the choir loft by the
end of 2009!
The Handbell
Choir has an opening for at least one new member. If you can count
to four, distinguish between your right and left hands, and like to learn and
have fun with other people, you possess the basic qualifications to ring handbells
and you are welcome to come try us out! Please call or email Laura Young (youngzoo@sbcglobal.net)
if you are interested in ringing.
