Updated Prayer Requests

  • Gena Hurst’s brother, Brian Humphrey, had surgery on January 29 for prostate cancer.  Doctors feel they got all of the cancer.  He thanks everyone for their prayers.
  • Jennifer Caughron, Rev. Diane’s granddaughter, will have a liver transplant soon.
  • Oran Nabors requires surgery for a ruptured disc in his lower back.  His surgery has been scheduled for March 3.
  • Please keep S.W. Christie in your prayers as he leaves for Nicaragua on February 20 with the Bible Independence Mission.
  • Prayers are asked for Breanna who is dying of brain cancer and has three young daughters.  She is a friend of Brian, Dakota’s father.  (Dakota is Christian Young’s half-sister.)

The prayer requests in The Link each week are recent updates. A list of ongoing prayer requests appears in our worship bulletin each Sunday.

Calling all men!  Come join us at IHOP (Plano Pkwy. just east of Preston Rd., south side of road) Friday, February 6 at 7:00 a.m.  No Bible, No Breakfast!  Questions?  Call Bob Knoll (972-618-8202) or Fred Hall (972-964-2727).

Valentine’s Pancake Breakfast

The Men's Bible Group will be cooking pancakes on Sunday, February 15, in honor of Valentine's Day.  Serving time will be 8:30 to 9:20 am.

Deacon Training

There will be a short training for deacons immediately following worship on Sunday, February 15.  All deacons should plan on attending this important meeting.  Thank you.

Thank you

“Dear Disciples Christian Church,

Thank you for your donation, received on January 27, 2009 in the amount of $1731.04.

Because of your compassion and generosity the Samaritan Inn is able to support people in Collin County who are experiencing homelessness.

In 2008, 683 people were housed and fed in our facility and 483 of them graduated – meaning they left our program with a full-time job and a place of their own to live.  We offer an intensive and therapeutic program and we insist on personal responsibility.

We believe that with appropriate support people can and will become productive members of the community again, but our services are not possible without you.

Gratefully – Lynne Sipiora, Executive Director”

Ministry Opportunities for Volunteers

The Department of Pastoral Care at Children's Medical Center Dallas would like to extend an invitation to become part of its Volunteer Ministry program.  Children's offers its Pastoral Care volunteers an opportunity to visit with patients and their families in non-critical areas of the emergency room, the urgent-care clinic, and day surgery.  These three areas represent the greatest need for chaplain volunteers to supplement the daily work of our full-time chaplains.  Children’s has one of the busiest pediatric emergency centers in the entire nation.

You need not be an ordained minister to participate, but all volunteers must complete a 15-hour training course before they begin serving as part of the Volunteer Ministry team.  In addition, a continuing education seminar led by senior staff chaplains is held monthly for all chaplain volunteers.

The next training session is scheduled to begin on April 21 and will continue for four consecutive Tuesday evenings from 6-9 pm, ending May 19.  Application packets (including participation requirements for all hospital volunteers) may be obtained through Volunteer Services at 214-456-6388.

Application deadline for the spring training session is Friday, March 6.  For additional information about Volunteer Ministry, please contact Children's Pastoral Care Department at (214) 456-2822.

From The TechnoManor

I feel like drawing this week.

In articles about technology (including mine), you probably see words like megabytes, megapixels, gigabits, and so on.  Usually after the 2nd word, your eyes glaze over (or you skip the article altogether).

I'd like to wave a wand and make that technobabble go away, but ya need to know about it.  So let's see if some pictures help.  Let me introduce “Dave's Anti-TechnoBabble Table”.

Most technobabble words are actually broken into 2 parts:

            the size the thingy

Like

            kilobyte

Here, kilo is the size (as in, how big is this thingy), and byte is the thingy.

So, my Anti-TechnoBabble Table will show you the sizes and the thingys.

Dave’s Anti-TechnoBabble Table

Sizes

Looks like

What it Means

Nothing at all

No need to multiply the thingy.

Kilo

1024 x the thingy

Abbreviated:  k or K

Mega

1024 x 1024 x the thingy

Abbreviated:  m or M

Giga

1024 x 1024 x 1024 x the thingy

Abbreviated:  g or G

Tera

1024 x 1024 x 1024 x 1024 x the thingy

Abbreviated:  T

Thingys

Looks like

What it Means

bit

Basic piece of information.  Can only be a zero or one.

Abbreviated:  b  (lowercase)

byte

Basic unit of storage.  Composed of 8 bits.  One byte can represent a number, letter, computer instruction, or anything a designer intends.

Abbreviated:  B  (uppercase)

hertz

A count of the master clock pulses driving the CPU.    With each pulse, the CPU does something.  Traditionally, this count represented the “speed” of a CPU.  The higher the number, the faster the CPU, and the faster the overall computer.

Can also mean the pulse rate of a radio signal.  This is useful in wireless networks (Wi-Fi).

Abbreviated:  Hz

pixel

Smallest identifiable picture element.  Photos, computer screens, and other visual devices aggregate pixels to present you with an image.

Here are some examples.

Let’s say your computer only has 512 megabytes of memory, but you really need 1 gigabyte.   Here’s a way to visualize this:

How Many

The Size

The Thingy

512 megabytes (MB) =

512 X

X

1 gigabyte (GB) =

1 X

 X

You’re trying to decide between an 80 GB hard drive and a 200 GB hard drive:

How Many

The Size

The Thingy

80 gigabyte (GB) =

80 X

 X

200 gigabyte (GB) =

200 X

X

Your digital camera shoots pictures with a resolution of 4 megapixels:

How Many

The Size

The Thingy

4 megapixels =

4 X

X

You get a flier from Verizon, offering you their 10 Mbit/s FIOS Internet service.  This means 10 megabits per second.  You currently have Verizon’s DSL service giving you 3 Mbit/s.  (These are download speeds into your computer.)  This would look like:

How Many

The Size

The Thingy

10 megabit (Mbit) =

10 X

 X

3 megabit (Mbit) =

3 X

 X

So, the next time you see technobabble, take a deep breath, pull out this table, and look up the words.  Then you’ll have a mental picture of the technobabble.  Hopefully, that picture will help you make a better choice in dealing with the babble.

I gotta hurry up and finish this article.  My greyhounds are starting to stir.  You can help ease my creative agony by dropping me a technical question at:

I’ll answer one question each week in The Link.

Music Notes

by Laura Young

MUSIC NOTES:

The Chancel Choir is currently meeting in the sanctuary from 6:30-7:30 on Wednesday evenings and 9-9:25 a.m. on Sunday mornings to warm up before worship. If your New Year's resolution was to be more involved in the life of the church, while having a lot of fun, come and try us out! If you enjoy singing, we can use you! We have set a goal of needing to use all three rows of the choir loft by the end of 2009!

The Handbell Choir has an opening for at least one new member. If you can count to four, distinguish between your right and left hands, and like to learn and have fun with other people, you possess the basic qualifications to ring handbells and you are welcome to come try us out! Please call or email (youngzoo@sbcglobal.net) Laura Young if you are interested in ringing.

UPCOMING CONCERTS:

The Richardson Community Band will present "A Lincoln Tribute" on Sunday, Feb. 8th at 2 p.m. at the Hill Hall of the Eisemann Center in Richardson. More information can be found at richardsoncommunityband.org.

If you are interested in knowing more about joining one of the musical groups at Disciples, or know of upcoming music and arts events you wish to have included in the Link, please contact Laura Young, DCC Music Director. Thank you!
