Updated Prayer Requests
The prayer requests in The Link each week are recent
updates. A list of ongoing prayer requests appears in our worship bulletin each
Sunday.
Joseph had
a dream and he trusted it. The magi saw
a star and followed it. John the
Baptist resisted baptizing Jesus, but he did it. The host had run out of wine, and Jesus
provided it. The disciples were told he
was the son of God and they believed it.
And the world was changed.
Sometimes
the things we are asked to do seem too difficult. Sometimes we think they can’t be done. Sometimes we think we are not the person to
do it. And sometimes it just seems
impossible!
Jesus
said, “Take this cup from me!” But then
he said, “Not my will, but yours be done.”
And he drank the cup. And our
lives were changed.
God seems
to give us big visions and causes us to dream big dreams. Our job is to believe, to follow, and to do
it! Our job is to remember that with God
all things are possible. And in the
doing, God is always with us.
You are
the church. God has called you to this
time and place. What is the vision God
is giving you? What is in store this
year? Don’t just sit and wait for the
right leader. You do it! You make it happen. You are the church.
Galen and
I are sorry to be leaving you, but God will still be here. And God is your inspiration and your
strength. Make a difference! Be God’s church.
See you
Sunday,
Diane
Give 2
the Troops
The Disciples Women’s Ministry is collecting items to send
to our troops through an organization called “Give 2 the Troops”. We have placed a basket in the coffee area
for you to place your items in. There is
also a list of things they request as well as items that they ask us not to
send. The list is also on their web site
give2thetroops.com. Let’s all give to these wonderful defenders
of freedom.

Sanctuary Flowers
If you are interested in providing flowers for the
sanctuary during worship on a particular Sunday, please contact Jan in the DCC
office and let her know the date and occasion for which you are ordering. The cost of a bouquet is $40 (pays for the flowers
plus delivery).
Relief Nursery of
The Relief
Nursery is now open! We are able to provide a part-time therapeutic classroom
for toddlers (expanding to 0-5 years when we reach full implementation),
scheduled daytime respite care for children 0-5, a clothes closet, parenting
education and more. These services are available free of charge to families who
have multiple stress factors. For more information, please call 972-665-0298,
or check out reliefnurserycc.org on the web.
We are currently accepting applications for families wishing to start in
January, as well as accepting applications from prospective volunteers. Our first classroom is scheduled to open January 21st and
is expected to fill quickly.
Thank you
to the DCC staff and members who have helped us along the way. When our Advisory Board first began two years ago, with
your permission, Linda Gulick and I held the first six months of meetings here
as we started our planning. That group gave birth to the Board of Directors,
who hired the staff to prepare the program which is now opening. In addition, a few of you have shared financially, which is
always needed, and we appreciate your help!

Inaugural Sermon
CNN) -- The Rev. Sharon Watkins will deliver the sermon at the traditional
National Prayer Service on January 21, the day after Barack Obama is sworn in
as president, the Presidential Inaugural Committee announced Sunday. Watkins, the general minister and president
of the 700,000-member church Disciples of Christ, will be the first woman to
deliver the sermon at the inaugural event.
It takes place at the
National Cathedral in northwest
"I am truly honored
to speak at this historic occasion," Watkins said in a news release from
the committee.
She added, "I hope
that my message will call us to believe in something bigger than ourselves and
remind us to reach out to all of our neighbors to build communities of
possibility."

The TechnoManor
Have you
visited a Web site and seen messages like these:
You
need Flash 10 to correctly view this site.
Microsoft
Silverlight needed to enjoy this site.
So, what
are Flash and Silverlight? Why do you need
them to view Web pages?
Both of
these programs plug into your Web browser and allow you to display
animation. Flash is created by Adobe
(the makers of Adobe Reader).
Silverlight is created by Microsoft.
But wait a
minute, you didn't want to watch animation, just read
simple text.
More and
more Web sites are using sophisticated imagery to navigate (you might see
clever-looking menus at the side or top), to have an ever-changing background,
or (ug) to display advertising. All of
these things use animation. If you are
going to see this animation, you need little programs that plug into your Web
browser. You need Flash or Silverlight.
A Web site
will pick one or the other. They are
competing technologies that are not interchangeable.
Flash is
the predominant animation program. Most
new computers come with it installed.
Silverlight
is Microsoft's attempt to gain entry into this market. If you visit a Microsoft Web site, it will
offer you Silverlight. You might as well
take it. It's really not that bad.
The
process of installing Flash or Silverlight is fairly painless. The first time you visit a Web site needing
them, your Web browser will ask to get them if they’re missing. It will get your permission, first, then do the legwork.
So, does
the church's Web site use Flash or Silverlight?
No. I try to keep things
simple...for now.
And it
doesn't matter what kind of computer you use.
Flash and Silverlight run on Windows PCs, Apple Macs,
and Linux computers. That's also
their beauty. Web designers can develop
animations once, and have them work on any computer.
So, the
next time you visit a Web site and see a really impressive visual effect,
you're probably looking at a Flash or Silverlight program.
Guess I'm
gonna have to teach my greyhounds to send email. That way, I'll have technical questions to
answer. What?!? You say you have a question? Please, please send it to me at:
frenchygrey@gmail.com
I'll
answer one each week in The Link.

MUSIC NOTES:
The
Chancel Choir has resumed rehearsals. We will be meeting in the sanctuary from
6:30-7:30 on Wednesday evenings and 9-9:25 a.m. on Sunday mornings to warm up
before worship. If your New Year's resolution was to be more involved in the
life of the church, while having a lot of fun, come and try us out! If you
enjoy singing, we can use you!
The
Handbell Choir will resume in February so that we have time to prepare for Easter
music. If you can count to four, distinguish between your right and left hands,
and like to learn and have fun with other people, you possess the basic
qualifications to ring handbells and you are welcome to come try us out!
