Clark’s Clips

Was it just a month ago that I was writing about Christmas?  And now I am looking forward to the events of the 2009.  In such a few short days we’ll be back at the ranch full time.  We’ve got a list of things to do, mostly things that we didn’t or couldn’t finish in 2008.

Well that’s life.  There are always projects to start and then finish.  New and different things come along.  Life is filled with variety and change (if it were not, we’d be on our way to the Promised Land!).

Disciples Christian Church has been anticipating change, newness, vitality, and difference for the past year.  I hope you have been, and are, eager and patient.  In God’s own good time you will be blessed.  I have noticed that the ‘speed bumps’ in life give an opportunity to shift gears and re-establish direction, and speed.  Your goal is still the same but there is a definite change.

There were some changes when we came.  I hope that you were not overwhelmed.  We surely enjoyed our year with you; you have been wonderful to work with.  Work together in the Holy Spirit with confidence in the future.  Faust Matthews (of the Matthews Brothers Quartet) used to sing,

“Let go, and let God have his wonderful way; your troubles will vanish,

                                                      your night turn to day.”

That’s a good thought to guide you through the future.

God bless. GGC

Give 2 the Troops

The Disciples Women’s Ministry is collecting items to send to our troops through an organization called “Give 2 the Troops”.  We have placed a basket in the coffee area for you to place your items in.  There is also a list of things they request as well as items that they ask us not to send.  The list is also on their web site give2thetroops.com.  Let’s all give to these wonderful defenders of freedom.

Men’s Bible Study

Calling all men!  Come join us at IHOP (Plano Pkwy. just east of Preston Rd., south side of road) Friday, January 9 at 7:00 a.m.  No Bible, No Breakfast!  Questions?  Call Bob Knoll (972-618-8202) or Fred Hall (972-964-2727).

Thanks!

The following thank you letters have been received after donations collected at the Disciples Womens’ Ministry Alternative Gift Market event were sent to the various organizations:

“Dear Disciples Christian Church,

Thank you for your donation which we received on December 22, 2008 in the amount of $2000.00 benefiting The Samaritan Inn.  Due to your contribution, and that of other individuals, churches, organizations and corporations, The Samaritan Inn is able to support people in Collin County who are experiencing homelessness.

In 2007, 760 people (from three-days old to 84-years old) stayed at our shelter and participated in our intensive therapeutic program designed to culminate in independence.  We thank you for helping us continue this critical mission.

Sincerely,

 Lynne Sipiora, Executive Director”

“Dear Friends:

Thank you for giving so generously through the Heifer gift catalog.

It’s been called the most important gift catalog in the world.  And there’s good reason!  Every gift you give helps create permanent solutions to poverty and hunger for children and families all around the world.

Best of all, through our cornerstone principle of “Passing on the Gift,” your gift keeps on giving – providing a sustainable source of food, income and opportunity to more and more families.

It is your kindness, generosity and compassion that makes the Heifer gift catalog, and our programs worldwide, such a success.  We appreciate your continued support.  Thank you!

Sincerely,

Jo Luck, President and CEO”

From The TechnoManor

I presume everyone had a busy holiday because… my forlorn Inbox is empty.

That’s ok.  I’ve been playing with a new toy the last few days.  I gave myself the gift of a netbook this year.  I’ll be writing more about it in a few weeks.

Something I learned while working with my netbook, though:  it has a very small screen.  This wasn’t a surprise.  But when I had to fish out a magnifying glass to read something, I had an “aha” moment.

I need to use ZoomIt!

ZoomIt is a free, handy program everyone over 35 should have in their computer arsenal.  With a couple of keystrokes, ZoomIt will magnify your entire computer screen.  You can move this enlarged screen one way or the other to zero in on that thing too small for human eyes to see.

Like those strange icons in the lower right.

ZoomIt is also useful if you’re using your computer when giving a presentation.  With it you can give a close-up of some important element on the screen, then underline the element with a move of the mouse.  I used ZoomIt in my Troubleshooting 911 workshops at church to show buttons, check boxes, and the like.

Where do you get ZoomIt?  Strangely enough, from Microsoft.  Again, it’s free!  It runs on Windows XP and Vista.  Do the following:

·         Visit this Web page:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897434.aspx

·         Click Run ZoomIt in the right-hand column.

·         At the File Download box, click Save.

·         Navigate to the place where you want to save ZoomIt.  The Desktop is a good place.  Then click Save.

·         Click Close when the download completes.

To use ZoomIt

·         Double click the ZoomIt file on the Desktop (or wherever you saved it).

·         In the Open File box, uncheck Always ask before opening this file.  Then click Run.  You should only have to do this once.

·         The first time you use ZoomIt, it will display the ZoomIt Options box.  This is also the only explanation about how ZoomIt works.  Click OK.  A tiny icon will appear in the lower right.

·         Now, press CTRL + 1.  The entire screen will be enlarged before your eyes.  Move the mouse and the screen will move around.  Press the up arrow to enlarge the screen.  Press the down arrow to shrink the screen.  If you left click and drag your mouse, you will draw a red line on the enlarged screen.  Press Esc to exit ZoomIt and get your screen back.

ZoomIt will hang around in the lower right system tray until you restart Windows.  So, if you need to magnify your screen again, press CTRL + 1.

If you need a refresher about how ZoomIt behaves, right mouse click the ZoomIt icon in the lower right and select Options.

I hope ZoomIt eases the strain on your eyes when you’re looking at small things on your computer.  Now I can put away my magnifying glass!

Music Notes

MUSIC NOTES:

The Chancel Choir has resumed rehearsals. We will be meeting in the sanctuary from 6:30-7:30 on Wednesday evenings and 9-9:25 a.m. on Sunday mornings to warm up before worship. If your New Year's resolution was to be more involved in the life of the church, while having a lot of fun, come and try us out! If you enjoy singing, we can use you!

The Handbell Choir will resume in February so that we have time to prepare for Easter music. If you can count to four, distinguish between your right and left hands, and like to learn and have fun with other people, you possess the basic qualifications to ring handbells!

If you are interested in knowing more about joining either of these wonderful groups of people, or know of upcoming music and arts events (like the one below) you wish to have included in the Link, please contact Laura Young, DCC Music Director. Thank you!
