Updated Prayer Requests

The prayer
requests in The Link each week are recent updates. A list of ongoing prayer
requests appears in our worship bulletin each Sunday.
Apprehension
– that’s what I felt. After all it had
been nearly seventy years since I had surgery; and that was a
tonsillectomy. I remember it vaguely,
but my mother and sister remembered it vividly!
My blood does not clot easily; so I got an extended stay in the hospital
and had everyone in the family pretty upset.
I suppose
the memory of their fears was working on me.
And I didn’t know anyone who had microwave thermotherapy. Plus, I got really sick following the initial
tests: would that happen following the surgery?
Finally, I was concerned for Diane, as she was uptight over the
situation. You know what I did? I put it in the hands of the Lord.
So far,
everything seems fine.

Sorry for the delay sending out more pictures. We
have a large contingent of youths in town working the resorts, they seem to
have hacked the PC reservation system at the library.
Today is one of the days old age and treachery overcomes youth and skill ;-)
In any event, still hiking regularly. The last trail was 15 miles around
a watershed. The place where the rock got blasted out at the foot of the
valley is the parking area. At the top of the ridge line is a formation
of granite tors.
Once upon a time loooooong ago the molten granite smooshed up through the dirt,
stopped, solidified, the dirt eroded away. Neat stuff.

Ahhh, this
week someone has responded to my plea and sent me a question:
I purchased a new computer. How can
I recycle my old one and make sure that all my personal information won't go
with it? I know nothing about hard
drives, etc.
I’m going
to answer the question from the point of view of a Microsoft Windows-based
PC. If you use an Apple Mac or a
Linux-based computer, the basic answer applies but the finer details will be a
little different.
First note
that deleting the files and emptying the Recycle Bin is not enough. Windows computers squirrel away important
bits of personal information in internal repositories (one called the
“Registry”). While you may have gotten
rid of the visible personal data, these repositories still contain bits of
information that you do not want to hand out.
That said,
here are three ways to make sure your personal data doesn’t go with that
computer. Unfortunately all are “techie”
and may require a few hours to perform.
You may want to enlist the aid of a relative or friend who is
comfortable with technology (or has a vendetta against computers).
Lest I
forget, make absolutely sure you have copied (and tested) all your personal
information to that new computer before you begin. Once the data is erased from the old
computer, it’s gone forever.
Choice
one
Physically
remove the hard drive and damage it in such a way to render it useless. A technique I’ve used is to take a hammer and
screwdriver and punch holes in it. It’s
very therapeutic! You always wanted to
beat up a computer haven’t you?
While you
haven’t actually removed your personal information, there is no way to read it
from the damaged hard drive. You can
then discard the hard drive. Do not send
it along with the remainder of the computer to recycle.
Choice
two
If you
still have the Windows Installation CDs that originally came with the computer,
you can reinstall Windows and reformat the hard drive as part of the
reinstallation. All information is
totally removed during the reformat process and a clean version of Windows
installed. This will allow the computer
to be used again by someone else.
You can
recognize installation CDs from the label on the CD. Here are a few samples:
·
Operating System CD
·
Reinstallation CD
·
For Distribution Only with a New
PC, Microsoft Windows 98
·
Upgrade, Windows XP Home Edition.
Note that
you must use the installation CDs specific to that computer. Beginning with Windows XP, Microsoft became
very restrictive about installing copies of Windows multiple times and from
other computers.
Choice
three
If you
don’t have the original installation CDs for the computer, you can use
publicly-available programs that allow you to totally erase the hard
drive. These programs wipe the hard
drive clean of all information.
One
program that I’ve used for this task is called DBAN, (it stands for Darik's
Boot and Nuke). This program can be
found on the Web at: http://dban.sourceforge.net/. It must be downloaded and burned to a
CD. Look for a link to the README.TXT
file for details. Once you have erased
the hard drive, you can safely donate the computer.
And where
can you recycle that computer (sans personal information)?

Now go
reclaim your personal data and recycle that computer with confidence!
