Clark’s Clips

The city park was just down the street.  We lived in a house with electricity and a crank phone; there wasn’t any indoor plumbing; we raised chickens; and there was a pasture behind our chicken yard.  So I was intrigued by the reel-style “gang” lawn mowers powered by gasoline that were used to mow the park.  And the operator stood on a platform to run the mower!  What prodded this memory?  The yard man stands on the lawnmower here at the apartment.

Memory is a powerful, if capricious, ability.  Memory can overpower us at the most unexpected times.  Memory can make us sad; nostalgic; happy; introspective; ashamed; exultant; etc.  Trips down memory lane can lead us to destinations we didn’t imagine.

There is a story about a people who could not imagine (or, “remember the future” as they put it).  They could only remember the past.  How fortunate we are that God, in infinite wisdom, blessed with us with both memory and imagination.  We can imagine the future.  As a congregation we can imagine what we want to be; what we want to do; what missions we want to undertake; what directions we want to travel.  We know where we’ve been, what has been accomplished, what has been failures, what didn’t go anywhere; what we want to try again AND what we don’t want to try again.

Imagination can do all the things memory does for us.  But it is up to us to do what we imagine.  Jesus opened the flood gates of imagination for his hearers.  Jesus imagined for them a brighter world than the one in which they lived.  Jesus imagined for them a world of love and kindness and fellowship.  It all still works for us today.

Few of us still mow the lawn manually.  I haven’t seen a reel mower in years. Many of us sit down to do the mowing.  What is different about “church” now from what we can remember?  Do you want to go back there?  With God’s help it is up to us to keep the church moving; to tread where the saints have trod.  Tomorrow we will be the saints the church remembers.

God bless.

HELP!

We need volunteers this Sunday, June 29 after worship to replace labels on the remaining 9 cases of water bottles to be handed out at the Plano 4th of July parade.  This is the LAST SUNDAY BEFORE JULY 4,TH  so it needs to be completed this weekend.  Mike Bell is the contact person for this event.  There is also a need for volunteers at the parade to pass out the bottles, get the trailer/float, drive the vehicle/float during the parade, and decorate the trailer/float.  Please consider helping out with this fun and meaningful event.

4th of July Parade -- Details

All parade participants should be to the church by 8 am.   Please park in the church parking lot and walk over to the east side of the Plano Senior High parking lot. We will decorate the trailer/float (thanks to Chuck and Nancy) and finish preparations for the parade.

The row assignment and instructions for the 2008 parade have not made it to me yet, but should arrive soon.  Below are instructions from LAST YEAR’S 2007 PARADE:

Information for Line-Up from the City of Plano

Line-Up will begin at 7:30 am (NOT BEFORE) at Plano Senior High (northeast corner of Park and Independence). The line-up area is the large parking lot east of the school, between the school and Westside Drive.  Volunteers will be in place to assist you at the entry point.

Please do not arrive any earlier than 7:30 am as we will not be prepared and staffed with our volunteers yet. However, please do arrive before 8:30 am so that each row can be organized and the final parade line-up recorded and provided to the parade commentators and broadcasting station(s) before the parade begins.

From The TechnoManor

by Dave Gillen

Well, it’s Tuesday morning and my Inbox is empty.  Just a reminder, send your computer, email, Web, or related questions to:

frenchygrey@gmail.com

I’ll attempt to answer one each week in The Link.

So, tell me:

If you throw spam against a firewall, will it stick?

The quick answer is:  No.  But let’s talk about this.

Spam is a canned meat product from Hormel Foods.  Oops, wrong spam.  The one we want to talk about are those unwanted pieces of email you get from people you’ve never heard of.

Why do you get that unwanted email?

  • Your email address got on mailing list without your permission.
  • Your email address is reasonably common and a computer guessed it by looking in an electronic dictionary and trying different combinations of words or numbers.

So, how could your email address get on a mailing list?  The most common ways are:

  • You gave it to someone or some company legitimately, but they sold it or gave it away.  (Always be sure you read the fine print when giving someone your email address!)
  • It appeared on a Web site.  Maybe you are a contact person for an organization or event.  A scavenger computer on the Internet extracted your address and added it to a database for nefarious purposes.
  • It was on a friend’s computer, or server computer of someone you do business with.  Their computer was compromised (often through some malicious software).  The compromise sent your email address to computers on the Internet that accumulate pilfered information for unscrupulous purposes.

What can you do about spam?  There are a few things, but all have drawbacks.  You could:

  • Try anti-spam programs.  They have to be trained to watch for keywords or sender email addresses.  The senders’ addresses often change and tricks can be used to mask the offensive keywords.  Some spam seeps through.
  • Use your Internet Service Provider (ISP) or email provider’s anti-spam blocking tools.  These do work, but are sometimes “overzealous” and block legitimate email.
  • A technique I use assumes all email is spam.  My email program looks for the sender’s email address in my contacts list.  If they’re found, the email is put in my Inbox.  The drawback is I have to examine my “spambox” periodically for email from new (desirable) senders.
  • Get a new email address!  If too much spam is still getting through, the best thing to do is to start over by getting a new email address.   This is not a desirable thing, but sometimes it’s the best option.

Won’t my firewall block spam?

A firewall is typically a special program (in a corporation it is often a special computer) that filters all the information between other programs on your computer and the Internet.  This filter can prevent information from being sent to the Internet, or allow it to pass through.  The filtering also applies to information arriving from the Internet.

In general, the firewall passes email and Web surfing, but blocks (or forbids) everything else going to or coming from the Internet.

Since spam is simply unwanted email, if you try to block spam in your firewall, the only way to do this is to block all email.  So, you’re sort of throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

So the answer to the question: If you throw spam against a firewall, will it stick?

The answer is a conditional, “No, unless you want to stop receiving all email.”

Chancel Choir:

Piano Update:

We have all enjoyed John Dysart's beautiful baby grand piano for these past two years.  He has generously trusted us to care for it in his absence.  He now has a place for it, and will be retrieving it at the beginning of July.  On Sunday, July 29th, one of Julie's star students, Alex Brombal, will come as a guest musician.  All of the music and special music will be on the baby grand that Sunday so that you may really enjoy it one final time.

The Chancel and Handbell Choirs are now on summer break.  We will return to rehearsals in August.

Upcoming Local Concerts:

The Richardson Community Band will be playing a concert on July 4th at the Richardson Family 4th event at Breckinridge Park. The band will play at 8 pm, followed by fireworks over the lake. Come early with your lawn chairs or blankets. Concessions are available, or you may bring your own picnic. For more information, see cor.net and click on "4th of July."
