Updated Prayer Requests

  • Charlotte Nabors has gotten excellent news that she will not need chemotherapy.  Her energy level is just about back to normal and she is getting back to a normal routine after her recent lumpectomy and radiation seeding for breast cancer.
  • The people of Myanmar after the devastating cyclone.  Week of Compassion has sent an emergency gift of $25,000 to the Myanmar Council of Churches and will send more when requested.
  • Curtis Gulick, Linda Gulick’s son, had surgery to remove his thyroid on Monday, May 12.  The cancer was encapsulated in the nodes thankfully!  He will be at home recuperating for the next few weeks.
  • For the citizens of China suffering after the severe earthquake.  Week of Compassion has sent $17,000 so far.

The prayer requests in The Link each week are recent updates. A list of ongoing prayer requests appears in our worship bulletin each Sunday.

Clark’s Clips

Where does the time go?  It goes in spurts; it starts and stops.  It’s almost time to renew the lease on the apartment (have we been here that long already?).  During May we have celebrated Mothers’ Day and Pentecost on the same Sunday.  Newcomers Café is being held each Sunday evening in May (the President of Brite Divinity School will be the speaker this Sunday).  The youth will be serving breakfast and leading Worship this Sunday morning.  If you have someone in high school or college, you have been busy with all of the end-of-year activities.  Oh yes, don’t forget we have the Memorial Day holiday coming up (we’ll probably close the office that day).

We all know about time: there’s not enough of it, is there?  But everybody shares the same amount!  Dona Rose-Heim, in her study book for women, reminds us that God could have created everything instantly, but chose to create on a daily basis.  I suppose we all need to slow down a little, and re-order our priorities.  Joshua, lecturing the Israelites before entering the Promised Land, suggested some choices, but concluded that his family would serve the Lord.

Sometimes we have to make a decision about how and when we will serve the Lord.  As you contemplate the life of faith I invite you to put God and the things of God first; then stick too it.

Coming Soon:  VBS Power Lab!

Everyone

Imagine…

…a child hearing about God’s love for the first time.
…kids worshipping in powerful ways.
…children praying for each other.
…adults and teens modeling Jesus’ love to children.
…the kids in our church sharing Christ with children around the world.
…children serving each other.

This summer, let’s transform our church into a bubbling science lab.  Be a part of the vacation Bible school at Disciples Christian Church during August 11-15.  It’s our goal to reach 60 kids with this program!  That’s 60 kids who will grow in their relationship with God.

We’re praying this awesome VBS program will touch children’s hearts and lives with God’s love.  Help kids in our community discover that:

           Jesus gives us the power

*       to be thankful,

*        to help others,

*       to be brave,

*       to live forever, and

*                to tell others about God.

As we plan and prepare for Power Lab, our team would cherish your prayers.  Pray that God would give us wisdom in planning.  Pray for the right staff members to join our team.  And pray that God would begin working in the hearts of the children who will come to Power Lab!

     Watch for more information about this exciting ministry event!

Computer Question and Answer Forum

by Dave Gillen

See if you can answer these questions:

  • If a RAM megabytes you, will you get a virus?
  • Can a phish get caught in an Internet?
  • If you throw Spam against a firewall, will it stick?
  • Does this all sound like a bunch of gibberish to you?

Well, if it does, let’s see if we can make sense of this technobabble.

Dave Gillen is offering a Computer Question and Answer Forum in June.  There will be no set presentation.  Bring your computer questions, Web puzzles, and Email conundrums to the forum.  Dave will help untangle the mess for you.

The forum will be held Sunday, June 8th at 5:30 PM.  It will last about an hour…or until the well of questions runs dry.

And the answers to the questions are:  no, yes, no, and yes.  You’ll have to come to the forum to find out why!

Guest Speaker

A special treat is going to be available this Sunday evening, May 18 at 5:30 at the Newcomers Café.  On that evening, Dr. Newell Williams, President of Brite Divinity School at TCU will tell us about the history, beliefs and practices of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).  Newcomers will benefit very much from this presentation, but even if you are a long time member of the church, you will want to come hear Dr. Williams!

Newell has written and edited several books and articles about the history of the Christian Church and about Christianity and culture in America.  Among the books is a spiritual biography of Barton Stone, one of the founders of the Christian Church movement and the leader who insisted on the unity of all Christians.  He has taught the history and polity of the Christian Church in seminary.  He also loves to talk about our roots.

Dr. Williams is a fascinating speaker. Everyone will benefit from Newell’s visit.  Plan to be here!

Attention Ladies!

Most of you have heard that we are restarting the Christian Women's Fellowship this fall.  Well, it's time to get the ball rolling.  Letters are going out this week with a survey.  We want everyone's input.   Please fill out the survey and place it in the CWF basket in the narthex or send it to the office at the church.  All the results will be compiled and discussed at a meeting on Sunday, June 1, at 4:00 pm.   We are so excited about getting this important ministry started again.  If for some reason you fail to receive a survey, please contact Mary Carroll at 214-673-6151 or m48carroll@hotmail.com.
