Clark’s Clips

This coming Sunday, May 11, is Pentecost.  It is the day we celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit to the first disciples and the beginning of the church.  On the day of Pentecost, the Spirit came over Peter and the other disciples and they preached about Jesus and the salvation God gives through him.  On that day about three thousand people were baptized!

The gift of the Spirit is not just a one-time happening.  It happens over and over again as the Holy Spirit comes to each of us, giving joy or answers to prayer or strength or courage, meeting our spiritual needs and moving us forward and giving us peace.

On this Sunday as we celebrate, let us wear something red, to symbolize the giving of the spirit with the tongues of fire and an outpouring of faith.  Red is the color of the day!

See you on Pentecost!

Diane

Pentecost Offering 2008 – “Share the Chalice”

This year, through the Pentecost Offering, DCC along with other Disciples churches, will support the New Church Ministry of the Disciples throughout the U.S. and Canada, and right here in our region.  This offering helps in the recruiting and training of New Church planters, and we share in the fruits of their ministry, bringing God’s message to new places and new communities.  We “Share the Chalice” and multiply the love.  The offering will be collected this Sunday, May 11.

Coming Soon:  VBS Power Lab!

Everyone

Imagine…

…a child hearing about God’s love for the first time.
…kids worshipping in powerful ways.
…children praying for each other.
…adults and teens modeling Jesus’ love to children.
…the kids in our church sharing Christ with children around the world.
…children serving each other.

This summer, let’s transform our church into a bubbling science lab.  Be a part of the vacation Bible school at Disciples Christian Church during August 11-15.  It’s our goal to reach 60 kids with this program!  That’s 60 kids who will grow in their relationship with God.

We’re praying this awesome VBS program will touch children’s hearts and lives with God’s love.  Help kids in our community discover that:

           Jesus gives us the power

*       to be thankful,

*        to help others,

*       to be brave,

*       to live forever, and

*                to tell others about God.

As we plan and prepare for Power Lab, our team would cherish your prayers.  Pray that God would give us wisdom in planning.  Pray for the right staff members to join our team.  And pray that God would begin working in the hearts of the children who will come to Power Lab!

     Watch for more information about this exciting ministry event!

Computer Question and Answer Forum

by Dave Gillen

See if you can answer these questions:

  • If a RAM megabytes you, will you get a virus?
  • Can a phish get caught in an Internet?
  • If you throw Spam against a firewall, will it stick?
  • Does this all sound like a bunch of gibberish to you?

Well, if it does, let’s see if we can make sense of this technobabble.

Dave Gillen is offering a Computer Question and Answer Forum in June.  There will be no set presentation.  Bring your computer questions, Web puzzles, and Email conundrums to the forum.  Dave will help untangle the mess for you.

The forum will be held Sunday, June 8th at 5:30 PM.  It will last about an hour…or until the well of questions runs dry.

And the answers to the questions are:  no, yes, no, and yes.  You’ll have to come to the forum to find out why!

Guest Speaker

A special treat is going to be available on Sunday evening, May 18 at 5:30 at the Newcomers Café.  On that evening, Dr. Newell Williams, President of Brite Divinity School at TCU will tell us about the history, beliefs and practices of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).  Newcomers will benefit very much from this presentation, but even if you are a long time member of the church, you will want to come hear Dr. Williams!

Newell has written and edited several books and articles about the history of the Christian Church and about Christianity and culture in America.  Among the books is a spiritual biography of Barton Stone, one of the founders of the Christian Church movement and the leader who insisted on the unity of all Christians.  He has taught the history and polity of the Christian Church in seminary.  He also loves to talk about our roots.

Dr. Williams is a fascinating speaker. Everyone will benefit from Newell’s visit.  Plan to be here!
