Updated Prayer Requests

  • Sheila Kolb, fellow teacher of Pat Brown and Rosie Lewallen, whose cancer markers are up again.  This is her 4th or 5th bout with cancer.  Pray for peace as she awaits another MRI in July.
  • Joyce Leraas is still struggling with lung issues.  She has been moved to another facility with different doctors and can have visitors for only 10 minutes at a time.
  • Charlotte Nabors is doing well after having a lumpectomy on April 18.  She received “seeds” of radiation as part of her treatment.
  • New DCC member, Mackins Shei, asks for prayers to help him find a job and school to attend during this difficult time.

The prayer requests in The Link each week are recent updates. A list of ongoing prayer requests appears in our worship bulletin each Sunday.

Clark’s Clips

The church lawn has been mowed.  I got part of the lawn up on our ridge mowed.  But we got 2.2 inches of rain since then and now the back yard is beginning to resemble a jungle.  I’ll probably need GPS so I won’t get lost in all the lush vegetation!  And it will be me who gets to mow it.

It is that season of the year when we know we have to do it.  Weeds have to be pulled or sprayed; lawns have to be tended; trees may have to be pruned; and all that other outdoor work is staring us in the face.  We have to do it.

Did you know that the youth of our congregation are calling themselves the Doers?  They have been studying the book of James in Sunday School class, and have adopted that name for their class and their projects because of their studies.  I think we ought to follow their lead in this: let’s be doers.

Moreover, we ought to be doers based on our faith and our talents.  I think we would all be amazed at what gets accomplished when we put our faith to work (and I mean more than mowing).  Get ready to be amazed on May 18, when the youth lead us in Worship.  I’m looking forward to it.

In the meantime ask one of the youth about this: _ _   _ _  _ _  _ _  _ _  _ _  _ _

_ _   _ _  _ _.  I’m sure they will be happy to explain it to you.

Thanks for all the prayers while I was ill, and all the well wishes.  God bless.  GGC

Pentecost Offering 2008 – “Share the Chalice”

This year, through the Pentecost Offering, DCC along with other Disciples churches, will support the New Church Ministry of the Disciples throughout the U.S. and Canada, and right here in our region.  This offering helps in the recruiting and training of New Church planters, and we share in the fruits of their ministry, bringing God’s message to new places and new communities.  We “Share the Chalice” and multiply the love.  The offering will be collected on May 4 and 11.

Coming Soon:  VBS Power Lab!

Power Lab is this year’s VBS theme that will explore the miraculous power of God and Jesus Christ.  It is an exciting theme that everyone in the church will want to be involved with.  It is going to be held here at DCC on Monday-Friday, August 11-16, 2008, from 9:00 a.m. until noon.  While it is a fun theme, many hands are needed and many workers required in order to have a good program to benefit sixty or so children to help them build a firm faith foundation.  And we guarantee that your faith will be fed, too!

Rev. Diane Clark is going to direct the program.  If you can help at all, please see or call Diane, if she hasn’t cornered you first!

See if you can answer these questions:

  • If a RAM megabytes you, will you get a virus?
  • Can a phish get caught in an Internet?
  • If you throw Spam against a firewall, will it stick?
  • Does this all sound like a bunch of gibberish to you?

Well, if it does, let’s see if we can make sense of this technobabble.

Dave Gillen is offering a Computer Question and Answer Forum in June.  There will be no set presentation.  Bring your computer questions, Web puzzles, and Email conundrums to the forum.  Dave will help untangle the mess for you.

The forum will be held Sunday, June 8th at 5:30 PM.  It will last about an hour…or until the well of questions runs dry.

And the answers to the questions are:  no, yes, no, and yes.  You’ll have to come to the forum to find out why!

Guest Speaker

A special treat is going to be available on Sunday evening, May 18 at 5:30 at the Newcomers Café.  On that evening, Dr. Newell Williams, President of Brite Divinity School at TCU will tell us about the history, beliefs and practices of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).  Newcomers will benefit very much from this presentation, but even if you are a long time member of the church, you will want to come hear Dr. Williams!

Newell has written and edited several books and articles about the history of the Christian Church and about Christianity and culture in America.  Among the books is a spiritual biography of Barton Stone, one of the founders of the Christian Church movement and the leader who insisted on the unity of all Christians.  He has taught the history and polity of the Christian Church in seminary.  He also loves to talk about our roots.

Dr. Williams is a fascinating speaker. Everyone will benefit from Newell’s visit.  Plan to be here!
