Updated Prayer Requests

  • Galen Clark is doing much better and recovering at home in Springtown.  He plans on being in church on Sunday.
  • Joyce Leraas is still struggling with lung issues.  She has been moved to another facility with different doctors and can have visitors for only 10 minutes at a time.
  • Charlotte Nabors is doing well after having a lumpectomy on April 18.  She is getting “seeds” of radiation as part of her treatment.
  • New DCC member, Mackins Shei, asks for prayers to help him find a job and school to attend during this difficult time.

The prayer requests in The Link each week are recent updates. A list of ongoing prayer requests appears in our worship bulletin each Sunday.

Clark’s Clips

We live in a very troubled and troubling world.  Sometimes our own lives are turned upside down.  Fears and disappointments surround us.  And we are sometimes filled with great anxiety.  Where can we turn?  Psalm 46 tells us:  “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in times of trouble.”  And so we turn to God and we turn to the church.

How can the church help us?  It is an anchor on Sunday mornings, but it can be so much more.  Only you can tell the church what you need.  Only you can inspire the church to be all that it can be to help us all in all the vicissitudes of life.

How can you do that?  Our evening Bible study is a good place to start.  This Sunday is the final session.  You are welcome even if coming for the first time.  We are envisioning the future of the church.  Your vision and your ideas are a help to all the leaders.

What do you want this church to be like in a year or two years, or more?  Come and tell us Sunday night!

See you Sunday – morning and evening!

Diane

Computer Question and Answer Forum

See if you can answer these questions:

  • If a RAM megabytes you, will you get a virus?
  • Can a phish get caught in an Internet?
  • If you throw Spam against a firewall, will it stick?
  • Does this all sound like a bunch of gibberish to you?

Well, if it does, let’s see if we can make sense of this technobabble.

Dave Gillen is offering a Computer Question and Answer Forum in June.  There will be no set presentation.  Bring your computer questions, Web puzzles, and Email conundrums to the forum.  Dave will help untangle the mess for you.

We have no set date or time.  That’s where you come in.  We need to know a few good dates and times for you.  The forum will last about an hour…or until the well of questions runs dry.  Let Bob Knoll (972.618.8202) or Dave Gillen (972.306.2019) know.  You can also write your suggested times on one of the comment cards in the pews, or drop Dave email (dave.gillen@verizon.net).

And the answers to the questions are:  no, yes, no, and yes.  You’ll have to come to the forum to find out why!

Guest Speaker

A special treat is going to be available on Sunday evening, May 18 at 5:30 at the Newcomers Café.  On that evening, Dr. Newell Williams, President of Brite Divinity School at TCU will tell us about the history, beliefs and practices of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).  Newcomers will benefit very much from this presentation, but even if you are a long time member of the church, you will want to come hear Dr. Williams!

Newell has written and edited several books and articles about the history of the Christian Church and about Christianity and culture in America.  Among the books is a spiritual biography of Barton Stone, one of the founders of the Christian Church movement and the leader who insisted on the unity of all Christians.  He has taught the history and polity of the Christian Church in seminary.  He also loves to talk about our roots.

Dr. Williams is a fascinating speaker. Everyone will benefit from Newell’s visit.  Plan to be here!

Plano – Charles Wolford, executive director for CITY House, is placing a call to action for help with the extensive wind damage that has halted the construction of My Friend’s House, a new emergency shelter under construction at 6525 Independence Parkway, Plano, TX 75023.

“During the overnight storms that affected the entire metroplex, we are waking up to extensive wind damage that will threaten this project.  Walls at My Friend’s House have collapsed, the framework of the structure has shifted, and it looks like we will have to tear down and start from scratch.  This will further delay this essential emergency shelter that will provide a safe haven for young children in crisis.”

Businesses, community organizations and the public are asked to help in any way possible.  Reconstruction will be costly and will further delay this essential project that will provide a safe haven for young children that are removed from unsafe homes due to abuse and neglect.  Among the most needed help are monetary donations, clean up of the site, and resources from construction companies that can donate money, time, resources and materials to this project.  Monetary donations can be made to CITY House at any Regions Bank location, at the CITY House Administrative Office, 1947 Avenue K, Suite 400, Plano, TX 75074 or online at www.cityhouse.org. Call CITY House offices at 972-424-4626 for further information.

CITY House is proud to recognize our community partners for this $1.5 million project including the Plano Rotary Clubs (adopting My Friend’s House as their 2005 Centennial Project), HomeAid/Home Builders Care (charitable arm of the Dallas area Homebuilders Association), and David Weekly Homes (Builder Captain).  Other corporate contributors include Star Children’s Charity, Dekelboum Foundation, Kaye Bassman, International, IKEA, Opus Foundation, Capital One, Legacy Texas Bank, Wachovia Bank, N.A. , Alcoa, Kiwanis Club of Plano and many other generous donors and supporters.

My Friend’s House is a new project for CITY House, a 501 (c) (3) private, non-profit agency located in Plano, TX. This facility will provide emergency, short – term shelter for children, newborn to nine years old, removed from their home due to abuse, abandonment or neglect.  During their stay, these vulnerable children will be provided safe shelter, food, clothing, medical care, transportation, school supplies, and education in the public schools.  In addition to these basic needs, the children will receive quality, 24 – hour care by highly trained staff, case management services, therapeutic counseling, various outings and recreational activities in the community.  My Friend’s House is being constructed at 6525 Independence Parkway, Plano, TX 75023 with a scheduled completion date in September 2008.

About CITY House:  Founded in 1988, the mission of CITY House is to strengthen the community by helping children, youth and their families resolve physical and emotional crises.  CITY House provides a complementary suite of intervention and prevention services at no cost to our clients.  For children ages 10–17, there is an Emergency Teen Shelter. The Family Counseling Center offers free short-term counseling for families in the community.  For young adults 18 –21, a Transitional Living Program prepares individuals for independent living.  These services are provided in Collin County and for children and families in the surrounding counties of Dallas, Tarrant, Denton, Kauffman, and Rockwall.
