Holy Grounds is Holy Ground

By Nancy Hall
Evangelism Ministry Team Coordinator

God spoke to Moses at the burning bush, "Take off your shoes ... you are standing on Holy Ground." I wish each of you could be with us on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Yesterday (Sept. 18), bikes were parked at the atrium door and 26 kids visited the coffee shop. Eight were new. I heard comments like, "I sure like to come here because at school we don't have time to really get to know one another," or "many thanks for the food." Other comments included, "I sure like it here," and "can I help you clean up?"

One of the highlights of the day was a new parent stopping by to pick his son up and asking me "What is going on here and why are you doing this?" Really DCC is to be praised for adopting a family that they don't get to see too often: Haggard Middle School Kids. This really is holy ground.

In her book Practicing Passion: Youth and the Quest for a Passionate Church, Kenda Creasy Dean writes, "The Passion of Christ is good news to adolescents, not because Jesus suffers, but because Jesus loves them with such wild, passionate hope that even death on a cross cannot stop his determination to win them. Adolescents ... desperately want to love something worthy of suffering, and to be so loved." Later in the same book, Dean says that youth are hardwired to seek something that is worthy of their passion.

It is still early, so this might be a bit of a premature judgement, but it appears that there are some local youth - mainly students at Haggard Middle School - that have found something worthy of their passion: Holy Grounds Coffee Shop.

With extended family surrounding them, Daniel and Vicki Gonzalez brought their soon-to-be adopted daughter Gabrielle to be dedicated last Sunday. They promised to seek God's grace and their church family's support in nurturing and caring for her. The church promised to surround this family with God's love and to tell Gabrielle the good news of Jesus Christ.

It was a sacred moment!

Bright Beginnings Preschool wants to thank two boy scouts from Troop 536. Two boy scouts have completed their Eagle Scout Project that has benefited the Preschool and church. Brian Dube, son of Barbara Dube, a teacher for the Preschool, raised money and directed a team of other scouts and family in installing new plastic edging for the playground, sanding and sealing the wooden playground equipment, and installing new roof tarps for the forts. David Ternan directed a team of scouts and family on re-roofing the playground shed. In the process he found that the shed walls were deteriorating, so he had to replace all the walls. Then the crew painted the shed and built a step in front of the door. A mom reorganized the toys inside, as an added benefit.

The children, staff and I are very thankful that these dedicated boy scouts and their friends and families helped improve our playground and shed for the benefit of the children of Bright Beginnings Preschool and Disciples Christian Church.

Don't forget the rummage sale this Saturday, September 22 in the church parking lot. Parking spaces are still available for rent - click here for lots more information.

If you receive The Link but do not regularly worship at DCC, you may want to join us on Sunday, October 7. Disciples Christian Church and First Chinese Christian Church will join together to celebrate World Communion Sunday. There will be several special pieces of music, a sermon about forgiveness and reconciliation, and special bread at the Lord's Table.

This is the one Sunday of the year when Christians all over the world are all gathering for Communion. Join us!

Last year, Trunk or Treat was our largest outreach event of the year. Expanded plans are underway for another great time. Please save Saturday, October 27, and keep checking The Link for updated information. Also, encourage your friends, co-workers and neighbors to save the date as well!

DCC Board Chair

The third quarter DCC board meeting is scheduled for Sunday, October 7, at 4:30 p.m. All board officers and ministry team coordinators are encouraged to attend.

Also, a congregational meeting will take place directly following worship on Sunday, October 28. At that meeting, the nominating team will present a slate of officers for 2008.

Adam's Animals is a non-profit foundation established in memory of Adam Hurst, a member of DCC and an NTA Youth Exec who died of leukemia on August 17, 1999 at the age of eighteen. In the past seven years Adam's Animals has collected and distributed over 21,500 NEW stuffed animals to sick children in area hospitals. Adam's Animals are distributed by doctors, nurses, EMTs and staff whenever there is a child in need of comfort. Each stuffed animal delivered brings love, hope, friendship, and the knowledge that someone cares. Your contributions help bring all this to children who need special attention.

DCC is a drop off location for Adam's Animals. Please help by bringing NEW stuffed animals to the Adam's Animals box in the Atrium. Each stuffed animal becomes a friend to a child in need of something to hold on to and love at a difficult time in their young life. For more information, visit the Adam's Animals website.

website
If you have not stopped by the DCC website recently, click on over. A significant update was made on Tuesday, September 18. Information about Holy Grounds Coffee Shop is up, as well as links to important BBPS literature.

Remember, church leaders can find important documents on the download page. Additionally, all of Rev. Coats' sermons can be found on the front page now.

Also, don't forget to visit the online calendar. It enables you to send yourself reminders of upcoming events, send invitations to friends and colleagues and download the church schedule to your personal computer. You can find all of the church activities, birthdays and anniversaries on that calendar, as well as the scheduled Elders, Deacons and Connectors for each Sunday.

Also, there is a place to submit prayer requests.
