He came in with a big world history book ... "I am a senior at PSHS. I love coffee and would like some ... Yes, I like cake too ... We have a big family ... I work at Taco Bell. My mother makes good tamales."

That conversation put an exclamation point on opening day for Holy Ground Coffee Shop. Talk about "God moments" ... this was one of them: visiting with guests from the high school. God is good. It was thrilling to sit and visit with a complete stranger. As he was leaving he said, "I am going to tell my friends about this place." We asked if he would like to pass out fliers Brian had made ... He said "sure," and took several. Then he said, "I'll see you again". This is the beginning of a very good thing. How good it is to be a member of DCC and be about God's business.

Make plans now to be at DCC for a special Sunday. On February 18, we will have a joint worship service with First Chinese Christian Church. Dr. Lian Jiang (pictured), the minister of FCCC, will be preaching a message entitled, "Jesus in China." He will share his experiences working with Christian churches in China. Following worship, FCCC has invited DCC to a fellowship luncheon in honor of the Chinese New Year.

This is an appropriate Sunday to hear about Christianity across the globe, as we will be taking our annual offering for Week of Compassion, the disaster relief and development agency of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).

Don't miss it!

Week of Compassion
This year we will celebrate our Week of Compassion special offering on February 18 and 25. Gifts to Week of Compassion support programs that help our neighbors around the world build lives and communities that are healthy, safe and sustainable, making a huge difference in the lives of millions of families.

To get a sense of the work Week of Compassion does, consider the following ...

More than 2 million people in the Darfur region of western Sudan have been uprooted from their homes, and some 400,000 people have been killed by ethnic violence or have died from hunger or disease. Most of the displaced families are living in makeshift camps, and humanitarian needs are urgent.

A grassroots advocacy campaign here in the U.S. is working to raise awareness of the plight of the families in Darfur. Until peace comes, the pressing need for food and shelter must also be met.

In a coalition effort, Church World Service is helping to provide water and sanitation, food, medicines, agricultural inputs and tools, and counseling to some of the most vulnerable. The program includes a supplemental feeding program for malnourished children.

The internally displaced girl (pictured on posters around the church) has waited in line for the water she now carries back to her family. Until the reasons behind her family’s flight from their home are resolved, your support for WOC is helping her and others like her in Darfur survive from day-to-day — and hope for tomorrow.

Disciple Christian Church children's ministry is growing!

Something BIG is about to break ground! On Sunday, February 25, a new program called "Sprouts" will come to life!

Following the children’s moment each Sunday in worship, children 4-8 years old are invited downstairs for an active and dynamic time of worship and learning geared specifically for children.

Led by trained and caring adults, children will learn about God’s love in a variety of ways from the highly- popular Veggie Tales characters. The kiddos will enjoy interacting with the popular Veggie Tales characters through:

  • Music
  • Drama
  • Puppet Theater
  • Videos
  • Bible Stories
  • Crafts
  • Snacks
It is our hope and prayer during this time together children will grow in their faith and discover just how much Jesus loves them and that they come to realize just how precious they are in God’s eyes!

For children 3 and younger, Tiffany Kidwell, our new nursery worker, will also be using Veggie Tales resources.

Love is in the air. Can you smell it? Enter any grocery store and the rich smell of chocolate and fresh cut flowers greet you at the door. Our senses are awakened by these sweet smells and visual delights as we cruise down the aisles searching for the perfect valentine to share with a special friend or loved one to let them know how much we care for them! Some people think love stinks. They’ve had a rough time in their relationships and have given up on love. My heart aches for them. God created us out of love and desires for us to be in relationship with one another. So, let’s get out there and share God’s love with them. Let them know that there is that special one whose love for them is so great that they would even give their life to save theirs. That special gift of love to share is Jesus Christ. That love he has for us doesn’t stink in fact it’s very sweet! His love for us is eternal and will never end. HOW SWEET! So share that love wherever you go and don’t forget to invite those you meet to join you at church so that they can indeed “taste and see that the Lord is good!”

With Much Love in Christ,
Donna

website
If you have not stopped by the DCC website recently, click on over. A significant update was made on Monday, January 15. There are more photos, and church leaders can find important documents on the download page. Additionally, all of Rev. Coats' sermons can be found on a new message series page.

Also, don't forget to visit the online calendar. It enables you to send yourself reminders of upcoming events, send invitations to friends and colleagues and download the church schedule to your personal computer. You can find all of the church activities, birthdays and anniversaries on that calendar, as well as the scheduled Elders, Deacons and Greeters for each Sunday.

Also, there is a place to submit prayer requests and a new feature called "DCC TV," which includes the videos from the "Let's Grow" campaign.

For website suggestions, please e-mail the church office.

Feel free to forward this e-mail on. If you are the recipient of a forwarded e-mail, and you have more questions about anything you see here or about Disciples Christian Church, send an e-mail to brian@dccplano.com.
