Updated Prayer Requests
Discipleship Sunday

In worship THIS Sunday, August 26, we will be praying for all students, teachers and education professionals, as the 2007-2008 school year begins the following day.

Additionally, we will be highlighting the educational opportunities and the Christian educators at Disciples Christian Church. Come and hear what each Sunday School class is up to.

The special event also has a mission focus. There will be several backpacks on the front steps. During the offering time, you are invited to come and "fill the backpacks" with school supplies for our Holy Grounds students. Please bring any of the following:

  • No. 2 pencils
  • spiral notebooks
  • loose-leaf notebook paper (wide- and college-rule)
  • colored pencils
  • red and black medium point pens
  • index cards
  • highlighters
  • graph paper
  • 120-count Kleenex boxes
  • glue sticks and erasers

See you this Sunday!

This Sunday is also important because we are saying "See you later" to Martha Pusko. She is moving to Las Vegas to be close to her family and her grandson. Stay after worship for a salad lunch, and be sure and give Martha a big hug!

ALL people who are interested in ringing handbells, singing in a choir (adult or children's), or being supportive of the music program at DCC in any way are invited to a Potluck Party in the atrium on August 29 from 6:30-7:30. It will be hot, so you are more than welcome to bring take-out to share if you prefer not to fire up your ovens. Your family is welcome. We will have a fun time of fellowship while planning our fall music programs. Thanks! Hope we see you there!

You are invited to join us for a Sunday-evening Bible Study beginning Sunday, September 9. Using the highly-popular Disciple Bible Study curriculum, we will be working through the book of Proverbs together. This is a six-week study, and even if you were unable to join us last year for our New Testament and Old Testament studies, feel free to come to this one. What a great way to start the new school year - in God's Word with brothers and sisters in Christ. It begins at 5:30 p.m., and Rev. Brian Coats will be teaching.

Bright Beginnings Preschool will start the new school year on August 27 with our Open House for the children and parents. We are looking forward to an exciting year with new and returning children and families. We do have openings in most age groups. Please let your friends and family know about our Christian-based Preschool.

I have recently run across a blogger that comes very highly recommended: Seth Godin. His blog is not about Christianity or church life. It is about marketing and communication. Nevertheless, he has much to say and much to share that churches can learn much from.

For example, I was watching a YouTube video of a presentation he gave to Google employees. He carefully and cleverly spelled out for them many of the things they were doing or had done right. He made a point of the fact that Google is personal and relevant. He said Google has not had to spend millions and billions of dollars on marketing - like virtually every other company of its size and stature - because of one oh-so-important concept: word of mouth ...

The "Open" sign lights up on September 4 for the second exciting year of Holy Grounds Coffee Shop. Many of you expressed interest in what we did last year. If you are REALLY interested, consider being a part of this ministry.

We need helpers on hand Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:00 to 5:00 pm. Consider taking off early from work once a month or so to help staff the coffee shop. Also, we need more laptops, as online access was a big hit during the spring. Perhaps you have a spare laptop you are not using. We can. Finally, we would like to add tutoring to the program. If you can assist with this, or if you can help in any way, please visit with Brian Coats or Nancy Hall.

Beginning Sunday, September 9, we will spend four Sundays talking about prayer.

Our text will be Matthew 6:5-14. This passage contains The Lord's Prayer. We say it every Sunday, but do we understand what we are saying? For instance, what do the phrases "Thy will be done," Thy Kingdom come" and "deliver us from evil" mean? Come and join us, as we unpack Jesus' answer to his disciples' request to "teach us to pray."

This series will also have a humorous and contemporary tone. We will take a look at movie clips every week that depict prayer. Don't miss it!

Adam's Animals is a non-profit foundation established in memory of Adam Hurst, a member of DCC and an NTA Youth Exec who died of leukemia on August 17th, 1999 at the age of eighteen. In the past seven years Adam's Animals has collected and distributed over 21,500 NEW stuffed animals to sick children in area hospitals. Adam's Animals are distributed by doctors, nurses, EMTs and staff whenever there is a child in need of comfort. Each stuffed animal delivered brings love, hope, friendship, and the knowledge that someone cares. Your contributions help bring all this to children who need special attention.

DCC is a drop off location for Adam's Animals. Please help by bringing NEW stuffed animals to the Adam's Animals box in the Atrium. Each stuffed animal becomes a friend to a child in need of something to hold on to and love at a difficult time in their young life. For more information, visit the Adam's Animals website.

Welcome
We are blessed with many regular guests who attend each week and make DCC their church home. "Continuing Visitors" are those new people who have recently attended two or more Sundays, or have been attending or visiting DCC regularly.

website
If you have not stopped by the DCC website recently, click on over. A significant update was made on Monday, August 13. There are videos and photos from the basketball camp and from the Plano July 4 Parade.

Remember, church leaders can find important documents on the download page. Additionally, all of Rev. Coats' sermons can be found on the front page now.

Also, don't forget to visit the online calendar. It enables you to send yourself reminders of upcoming events, send invitations to friends and colleagues and download the church schedule to your personal computer. You can find all of the church activities, birthdays and anniversaries on that calendar, as well as the scheduled Elders, Deacons and Connectors for each Sunday.

Also, there is a place to submit prayer requests.

For website suggestions, please e-mail the church office.

Feel free to forward this e-mail on. If you are the recipient of a forwarded e-mail, and you have more questions about anything you see here or about Disciples Christian Church, send an e-mail to brian@dccplano.com.
