Updated Prayer Requests
It WAS a Wild Ride

Avalanche Ranch was a GREAT adventure! 57 children spent five days at DCC last week learning that God is real, God is with us, God is strong, God is awesome and God is in charge. Wa-hoo!

A BIG word of thanks to all the volunteers that made Avalanche Ranch a big success: the station leaders, crew leaders and helpers. Altogether, about 30 adults and teenagers contributed time and talent.

Finally, be sure and let Donna Atkinson, the DCC Minister to Youth and Families, know how much you appreciate her hard work. During VBS, she frequently stayed well after the program ended to prepare for the next day. Great job, Donna!

Wa-hoo!

In worship on Sunday, August 26, we will be praying for all students, teachers and education professionals, as the 2007-2008 school year begins the following day.

Additionally, we will be highlighting the educational opportunities and the Christian educators at Disciples Christian Church. Come and hear what each Sunday School class is up to.

The special event also has a mission focus. There will be several backpacks on the front steps. During the offering time, you are invited to come and "fill the backpacks" with school supplies for our Holy Grounds students. Please bring No. 2 pencils, spiral notebooks, loose-leaf notebook paper (wide rule and college rule), colored pencils, red and black medium point pens, index cards, highlighters, graph paper, 120- count Kleenex boxes, glue sticks and erasers.

ALL people who are interested in ringing handbells, singing in a choir (adult or children's), or being supportive of the music program at DCC in any way are invited to a Potluck Party in the atrium on August 29th from 6:30-7:30. Please make a note on your calendars that this is one week later than previously announced at choir. It will be hot, so you are more than welcome to bring take-out to share if you prefer not to fire up your ovens. Your family is welcome. We will have a fun time of fellowship while planning our fall music programs. Thanks! Hope we see you there!

Thank You!
Thank you to Natalie and Becca Mitchell from East Dallas Christian Church who came to sing two weeks ago. What a blessing your music was to us!

I am also truly happy to have had the Avalanche Ranch VBS kids share music this past Sunday. What fun to have 57 kids and all of those leaders singing and dancing every morning! This week seems so quiet and drab in comparison.

Upcoming Local Concerts:
The final summer series 2007 concert of the Richardson Community Band will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday, August 19, at the Richardson Civic Center/Public Library lawn. Go South on 75, exit Arapaho to the right, and you will see the band setting up on the South side of the street. You are invited to bring your lawn chairs and picnic dinners to this free, family-friendly event.

Contemporary Christian singer Robin Mark will be in concert in Richardson next week. For more information about the concert, you can see www.canyoncreekpres.org. For more information about Robin Mark, please see www.robinmark.com.

You are invited to join us for a Sunday-evening Bible Study beginning Sunday, September 9. Using the highly-popular Disciple Bible Study curriculum, we will be working through the book of Proverbs together. This is a six-week study, and even if you were unable to join us last year for our New Testament and Old Testament studies, feel free to come to this one. What a great way to start the new school year - in God's Word with brothers and sisters in Christ. It begins at 5:30 p.m., and Rev. Brian Coats will be teaching.
BBPS

BBPS Director

Bright Beginnings Preschool will start the new school year on August 27 with our Open House for the children and parents. We are looking forward to an exciting year with new and returning children and families. We do have openings in most age groups. Please let your friends and family know about our Christian-based Preschool.

A CPR class will take place on Wednesday, August 22, for anyone interested. The cost is $25/person and will take place from 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm at 5000 Preston Rd. Childcare is not provided. Contact Linda Gulick at 214-770-0854 if you are interested.

The staff of BBPS and I want to thank Disciples Christian Church members and staff for all their support of the school and the wonderful relationship we share with you. We feel privileged to be doing God's Work in educating the children and preparing them for their futures.

At Starbucks, there is an important principle called "set up for success." Throughout the day, there are three shifts: morning, mid-day and close (or evening). Each shift and each shift supervisor tries to do all they can to help the next shift succeed. They attempt to "set them up for success" by making sure everything is clean, well-stocked and well-prepared.

At DCC, we have an opportunity in the coming weeks to set some young people up for success.

The "Open" sign lights up on September 4 for the second exciting year of Holy Grounds Coffee Shop. Many of you expressed interest in what we did last year. If you are REALLY interested, consider being a part of this ministry.

We need helpers on hand Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:00 to 5:00 pm. Consider taking off early from work once a month or so to help staff the coffee shop. Also, we need more laptops, as online access was a big hit during the spring. Perhaps you have a spare laptop you are not using. We can. Finally, we would like to add tutoring to the program. If you can assist with this, or if you can help in any way, please visit with Brian Coats or Nancy Hall.

Beginning Sunday, September 9, we will spend four Sundays talking about prayer.

Our text will be Matthew 6:5-14. This passage contains The Lord's Prayer. We say it every Sunday, but do we understand what we are saying? For instance, what do the phrases "Thy Kingdom come" and "deliver us from evil" mean? Come and join us, as we unpack Jesus' answer to his disciples' request to "teach us to pray."

This series will also have a humorous and contemporary tone. We will take a look at movie clips every week that depict prayer. Don't miss it!

The third and final game night of the summer was Sunday, August 12. The men defeated the women in tightly-contested, dramatic Pictionary battle.

Thanks to everyone who came out for cards, dominos and board games. A special word of thanks to Nicole Coats for organizing the summer get-togethers.

website
If you have not stopped by the DCC website recently, click on over. A significant update was made on Monday, August 13. There are videos and photos from the basketball camp and from the Plano July 4 Parade.

Remember, church leaders can find important documents on the download page. Additionally, all of Rev. Coats' sermons can be found on the front page now.

Also, don't forget to visit the online calendar. It enables you to send yourself reminders of upcoming events, send invitations to friends and colleagues and download the church schedule to your personal computer. You can find all of the church activities, birthdays and anniversaries on that calendar, as well as the scheduled Elders, Deacons and Connectors for each Sunday.

Also, there is a place to submit prayer requests.

For website suggestions, please e-mail the church office.

Feel free to forward this e-mail on. If you are the recipient of a forwarded e-mail, and you have more questions about anything you see here or about Disciples Christian Church, send an e-mail to brian@dccplano.com.
