Serendipity: A Family Fantasia
serendipity

By Fred Hall
Discipleship Ministry Team Coordinator

It's not your ordinary thing. Tid-bits of great food provided through the counsel of Rosalie and Rebecca ... An exercise in fun hosted by Julie ... A challenge to the mind and heart by Brian ... And a chance to make that serendipitous discovery.

It starts Wednesday, January 10, 2007 at 5:30 pm in the Holy Grounds Coffee Shop.

Be there!

It's a New Year, and a new message series begins at Disciples Christian Church on January 14.

As the calendar begins anew, we'll spend some time in the greatest beginning of all - the book of Genesis. Come and be reminded of some of the great stories of the faith, and see how they still speak to us today.

  • Jan. 14 ... Genesis 22:1-19 - Abraham and Isaac
  • Jan. 21 ... Genesis 18:1-14 - Abram and Sarah's Three Visitors
  • Jan. 28 ... Genesis 25:19-34 - Jacob and Essau
  • Feb. 5 ... Genesis 32: 22-32 - Wrestling with God
By Donna Atkinson
Minister to Youth and Families

The New Year is here! It is a time for new beginnings and a time when many of us make personal resolutions to work on areas of our life that we desire to improve upon. I invite you this week to meditate on Isaiah 43. As you open yourself up before God in this scripture, hear again our Creator God’s great love for you and assurance in His word, “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine.” vs 1b and also in vs 19, “I am about to do a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?” What a wonderful promise as we go forth in to a new year! I can hardly wait to see you at church and hear how God is moving in your life this new year! Remember to invite your friends to join us for our upcoming events!

Come and join us for a fundraising golf outing on Saturday, January 13 at 11 a.m. at Pecan Hollow Golf Course in Plano. Even if you did not sign up in December, there's still room to play! The cost for the four-person scramble is $65/player, which includes green fee, range balls, goodie bags, and participation in special contests (closest to the hole and longest drive).

To sign up yourself or a foursome, download the registration form on the DCC website, fill it out and return it to the DCC church office. Forms are also available in the church narthex.

Ninety percent of the funds raised go to help families with multiple family members going on the DCC Ski Trip. The other ten percent goes to the DCC Outreach ministry.

With a wonderful choir cantata, inspiring youth-led worship and 206 total worshippers on Chrismas Eve, Advent was certainly a joyous time at DCC. The Christmas and Advent decorations in our sanctuary certainly added to the joy.

This Sunday following worship, we'll be taking down the decorations and storing them. If we have a good volunteer turn-out, this should only take about one hour. Thank you for your help!

If you are a newcomer, a new member or an established member who just wants to find out the new direction DCC is going, join us in the new Holy Grounds Coffee Shop next month ...

  • Jan 14: Getting to know each other
  • Jan 21: Who we are as Christians
  • Jan 28: Who we are as the Christian Church
  • Feb 11: Who we are as Disciples Christian Church
Each session will begin at 5 p.m. To sign up, e-mail the church office. If you know of someone who might be interested in a class like this, feel free to forward this e-mail to them!
Rev. Brian Coats
One of my favorite playlists in my Itunes library is called, "Hymns: Ancient and Modern." It's a collection of old hymns by contemorary artists like Dave Crowder, Chris Tomlin and Matt Redman.

I listen to these songs over and over - they never tire. I think it's because I have always been a fan of combining things of "old" with things of "new." I love tradition, but I also love change. I like hearing "O Worship the King," but I also like the postmodern way Tomlin does it.

I am sure that is why I am looking forward to next Wednesday evening so much.

DCC Elders, Deacons, Board officers and ministry team coordinators are invited to make plans to attend the 2007 North Texas Area Leadership Training Event on Saturday, January 20 at First Christian Church in McKinney from 8:30 am - 4 pm. There are workshops for all facets of church leadership. Rev. Brian Coats will be presenting a workshop on what it means to be a missional church. For more information and/or to register, click here.
website
If you have not stopped by the DCC website recently, click on over. A significant update was made on Monday, December 18. There are more photos, and church leaders can find important documents on the download page. Additionally, all of Rev. Coats' sermons can be found on a new message series page.

Also, don't forget to visit the online calendar. It enables you to send yourself reminders of upcoming events, send invitations to friends and colleagues and download the church schedule to your personal computer. You can find all of the church activities, birthdays and anniversaries on that calendar, as well as the scheduled Elders, Deacons and Greeters for each Sunday.

Also, there is a place to submit prayer requests and a new feature called "DCC TV," which includes the videos from the "Let's Grow" campaign.

For website suggestions, please e-mail the church office.

Feel free to forward this e-mail on. If you are the recipient of a forwarded e-mail, and you have more questions about anything you see here or about Disciples Christian Church, send an e-mail to brian@dccplano.com.
