Hope is Born

"For to us a child is born, to us a son is given. And the government will be upon his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace." - Isaiah 9:6

This special season continues this Sunday, December 9. The birth of Christ is a time for hope, peace, joy and love. It is a time for worship, and it is a time for wonder. It is a time to remember that long ago, in a manger in Bethlehem, hope was born.

The following is a list of all of the ways that you can experience the hope of Christ at DCC this Advent:

  • Special worship elements: "Hope is Born" message series; family devotions; special music
  • Sunday, December 9 ... All-church fellowship event-a Christmas movie double- feature: "The Polar Express" at 3 pm; "It's A Wonderful Life" at 5:30 pm. Dinner and holiday goodies served in between the movies.
  • Sunday, December 23 @ 9 am ... All-church Christmas brunch
  • Collections for Salvation Army Angel Tree and Mike's Kids ... Our two Christmas outreach events: You can take an angel off the Angel tree, shop for the child or family, and return the gifts by Dec. 9. There are still a few “angels” on the tree, so if you haven’t already, please consider selecting an angel or two.  Bobby Overstreet has extended the deadline.  For Mike's Kid's, please bring new children's clothing and toys for refugees in the Rio Grande Valley by December 9. Also, all poinsettia honorariums and memorials will be donated this year to Adam's Animals.
  • Advent devotional books available in Holy Grounds Coffee Shop

Finally, the entire DCC family (and many guests) will gather at 7:30 pm on Monday, December 24 for a Candlelight Communion Christmas Eve Service. A Christmas Concert, featuring Julie Chen and other Disciples musicians, precedes the service at 7 p.m.

BC Talk

A couple of years ago, I took part in a workshop about leadership. We listened to CDs by Bill Hybels, the senior pastor at Willow Creek Community Church in Barrington, Ill. For a time, this was the largest church in the country.

I only remember a couple of things from the workshop. First, I remember that it was based on Luke 5:1-11. That is the passage where the Jesus' disciples leave the boats, drop the nets and follow him.

The other thing I remember is one of Hybel's main points: Good leaders have a bias for action. Hybels believed (as I do), that Jesus was a good leader, and this was one of the traits he exhibited - a bias for action. I am not completely sure why that point has stayed with me ... He undoubtedly had several other really strong points, but I cannot recall any of them.

Perhaps it has stayed with me because I value action-oriented leaders so much. As I reflect on DCC lay leadership for the last 18 months or so, that phrase - "a bias for action" - is very descriptive.

Telling the Good News: Online!

If you have not stopped by the DCC website recently, click on over. A significant update was made on Monday, November 12. There are photos of Trunk or Treat. You can access them from snapfish.com. You will need a username and a password, but it only takes a few seconds to get registered. There are 19 photos online from our fall festival, which was Saturday, October 27.

Remember, church leaders can find important documents on the download page. Additionally, all of Rev. Coats' sermons can be found on the front page now.

Also, don't forget to visit the online calendar. It enables you to send yourself reminders of upcoming events, send invitations to friends and colleagues and download the church schedule to your personal computer. You can find all of the church activities, birthdays and anniversaries on that calendar, as well as the scheduled Elders, Deacons and Connectors for each Sunday.

Also, there is a place to submit prayer requests.

For website suggestions, please e-mail the church office.
