Hope is Born

"For to us a child is born, to us a son is given. And the government will be upon his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace." - Isaiah 9:6

A special season begins this Sunday, December 2. The birth of Christ is a time for hope, peace, joy and love. It is a time for worship, and it is a time for wonder. It is a time to remember that long ago, in a manger in Bethlehem, hope was born.

The following is a a list of all of the ways that you can experience the hope of Christ at DCC this Advent:

  • Special worship elements: "Hope is Born" message series; family devotions; special music
  • Sunday, December 2 ... Hanging of the Greens Service at 10:30 am. Everyone will participate in this service, as we place Christmons on the tree and hear their meanings
  • Sunday, December 9 ... All-church fellowship event-a Christmas movie double- feature: "The Polar Express" at 3 pm; "It's A Wonderful Life" at 5:30 pm. Dinner and holiday goodies served in between the movies.
  • Sunday, December 23 @ 9 am ... All- church Christmas brunch
  • Collections for Salvation Army Angel Tree and Mike's Kids ... Our two Christmas outreach events: You can take an angel off the Angel tree, shop for the child or family, and return the gifts by Dec. 9. There are still quite a few “angels” on the tree, so if you haven’t already, please consider selecting an angel or two.  Bobby Overstreet has extended the deadline.  For Mike's Kid's, please bring new children's clothing and toys for refugees in the Rio Grande Valley by December 9. Also, all poinsettia honorariums and memorials will be donated this year to Adam's Animals.
  • Advent devotional books available in Holy Grounds Coffee Shop

Finally, the entire DCC family (and many guests) will gather at 7:30 pm on Monday, December 24 for a Candelight Communion Christmas Eve Service. A Christmas Concert, featuring Julie Chen and other Disciples musicians, precedes the service at 7 p.m.

BC Talk

For me, it simply does not get much better than last Friday.

First, A&M beat Texas for the second year in a row. As one
Texas fan graciously pointed out Sunday morning in church, the final score of 38-30 was not indicative of how the game really went. It really was not that close.

Music Notes

By Laura Young

Music Director

Fun statistic about DCC's Chancel Choir:

Two years ago, we had five members (sixth one was on hiatus, but returned!), with approximately a 30-some-year span between ages. As of November 2007, we have ten members, with about a 70 year age span from youngest to oldest! So, in two years, we have doubled our numbers and doubled the span between generations! Welcome to our newest members, Gary, Mary, Marin and Christina! We are so happy to have you!

Thank you to Ty and Marin Young for providing the special music on November 25th!

Upcoming local concerts:

Julie Chen will play piano accompaniments for the

Great Land Choral Society annual concert

Saturday 7:00 pm, December 1, 2007

Custer Road United Methodist Church

The Richardson Community Band will present a free Christmas concert (all ages welcome) on Wednesday, December 5th at at the

Richardson Senior Center (located at 820 West Arapaho). (The reason we will not rehearse for Chancel Choir that night is that your choir director is playing flute in this concert.)

Julie Chen's 15th Annual Student Recital

Saturday 4:30 pm, December 8, 2007

St. Andrew's United Methodist Church

5801 W Plano Parkway, Plano, TX 75093

Marin Young will be singing with Richardson ISD's All District Elementary Choir when they are special guests with the Turtle Creek Chorale this month on December 7th, 8th, and 9th at the Majestic Theatre in Dallas and December 16th at the Meyerson Symphony Center. Ticket information is available through turtlecreekchorale.org.

December 24th, 7-7:30 p.m. Julie Chen is organizing DCC's annual Christmas concert, which precedes the candlelight worship service at 7:30.

Upcoming rehearsals:

  • Sunday, Dec. 2 - 8:30 Chancel Choir
  • Wednesday, Dec. 5 - NO rehearsals due to a Christmas concert conflict for Laura
  • Sunday, Dec. 9 - 8:30 Chancel Choir
  • Wednesday, Dec. 12 - Handbell rehearsal
  • Sunday, Dec. 16- 8:30 Chancel Choir
  • Wednesday, Dec. 19- Chancel Choir rehearses for Christmas Eve and Epiphany
  • Sunday, Dec. 23- 8:30 Chancel Choir

Schedule change for one month:

In December, the Chancel Choir will meet every Sunday morning at 8:30 (not 9) to rehearse. By doing this, we will be able to gain enough rehearsal time to sing on each of the Sundays in Advent.

Chancel Choir and Handbells will take a break from Wednesday, Dec. 26th through the beginning of the New Year.

If congregation members have information to share about local concerts (especially ones in which you are performing), please email them to me for inclusion in the LINK. Thanks!

Telling the Good News: Online!

If you have not stopped by the DCC website recently, click on over. A significant update was made on Monday, November 12. There are photos of Trunk or Treat. You can access them from snapfish.com. You will need a username and a password, but it only takes a few seconds to get registered. There are 19 photos online from our fall festival, which was Saturday, October 27.

Remember, church leaders can find important documents on the download page. Additionally, all of Rev. Coats' sermons can be found on the front page now.

Also, don't forget to visit the online calendar. It enables you to send yourself reminders of upcoming events, send invitations to friends and colleagues and download the church schedule to your personal computer. You can find all of the church activities, birthdays and anniversaries on that calendar, as well as the scheduled Elders, Deacons and Connectors for each Sunday.

Also, there is a place to submit prayer requests.

For website suggestions, please e-mail the church office.

Feel free to forward this e-mail on. If you are the recipient of a forwarded e-mail, and you have more questions about anything you see here or about Disciples Christian Church, send an e-mail to brian@dccplano.com.
