Hope is Born

"For to us a child is born, to us a son is given. And the government will be upon his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace." - Isaiah 9:6

A special season begins on Sunday, December 2. The birth of Christ is a time for hope, peace, joy and love. It is a time for worship, and it is a time for wonder. It is a time to remember that long ago, in a manger in Bethlehem, hope was born.

The following is a a list of all of the ways that you can experience the hope of Christ at DCC this Advent:

  • Wednesday, November 28 ... Advent Decorating Party at 7:30 pm
  • Special worship elements: "Hope is Born" message series; family devotions; special music
  • Sunday, December 2 ... Hanging of the Greens Service at 10:30 am. Everyone will participate in this service, as we place Christmons on the tree and hear their meanings
  • Sunday, December 9 ... All-church fellowship event-a Christmas movie double- feature: "The Polar Express" at 3 pm; "It's A Wonderful Life" at 5:30 pm. Dinner and holiday goodies served in between the movies.
  • Sunday, December 23 @ 9 am ... All- church Christmas brunch
  • Collections for Salvation Army Angel Tree and Mike's Kids ... Our two Christmas outreach events: You can take an angel off the Angel tree, shop for the child or family, and return the gifts by Dec. 2. For Mike's Kid's, please bring new children's clothing and toys for refugees in the Rio Grande Valley by December 9. Also, all poinsettia honorariums and memorials will be donated this year to Adam's Animals.
  • Advent devotional books available in Holy Grounds Coffee Shop

Finally, the entire DCC family (and many guests) will gather at 7:30 pm on Monday, December 24 for a Candelight Communion Christmas Eve Service. A Christmas Concert, featuring Julie Chen and other Disciples musicians, precedes the service at 7 p.m.

We are moving towards t-minus days. As in, "t-minus (fill in the blank!) days" until the arrival of Coats daughter No. 2.

"Coats daughter No. 2" is such an awkward, sterile phrase, I know. We are working on that. This week we sat down in front of the computer and scrolled through two million or so names on babynames.com. We have some candidates, and here ...

Thanksgiving
"Praise God from whom all blessings flow
Praise Him all creatures here below
Praise Him above ye heavenly host
Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost"

We sing that song of praise and thanksgiving every Sunday. Join your church family for further thanksgiving - complete with turkey and all of the trimmings - THIS Sunday, November 18 directly following worship.

Jan and Mark Mueller are hosting a turkey-carving party the night before around 6 pm. You can let them know you are coming and get directions to their house by clicking here.

Bob and Dudley Nesmith joined Disciples Christian Church on Sunday, November 4!

The Nesmiths have lived in the Plano area for several years, as they came here for a job before Bob retired. He has spent time as a business manager for churches. They have four grown children between them.

After attending and being members of Stonebriar Community Church in Frisco, the Nesmiths said they were interested in a smaller church.

"We were going to visit several small churches," Dudley said, "but never got past the first one!"

Bob and Dudley are already involved in the Gospel Gang Sunday School class. They said they have been very appreciative of all of the friendliness at DCC.

Welcome Bob and Dudley!

Music Notes
By Laura Young
Music Director

Wow! You all sounded great on Sunday! In fact, not only did the Chancel Choir do a wonderful job, the congregational singing has been really sounding good lately. Thank you for trying out so many new hymns in November!

Speaking of hymns, if you have a favorite Advent / Christmas hymn in mind that you really want to sing this Christmas season, please email me the name this week (or even the first line, if you can't think of the name) so I can try to fit it in for you.

Upcoming rehearsals:

  • November 21 - no rehearsal due to Thanksgiving
  • Sunday, November 25 at 9 am ... Chancel Choir warm-up ("Amazing Grace")
  • Wednesday, November 28 at 6:30 pm ... Handbells
Upcoming local concerts:

If congregation members have information to share about local concerts (especially ones in which you are performing), please email them to me for inclusion in the LINK. Thanks!

Since February 6, 2007, 47 bodies have come through the DCC glass doors to the glass tables of Holy Grounds Coffee Shop. Incredible!!!!

Six of the original group - the ones that started on Feb. 6 - are still regulars. Two of them are active in Sunday morning worship and sunday school. Ages range from sixth grade to seniors in high school. The two computers are always in use, and some students work on homework.

DCC members have played an important part in the success and history of Holy Grounds. Bill Barker and Bob Knoll have arrived with hands full of pizza for all (keep in mind we have had 23 at a time). They had to have help carrying the pizza last Thursday, - about 10 boxes!!! Bob Knoll is a regular and has become the new coach for the Basketball challenge, which is set for Thursday, November 15. Brian treated us to a full length movie Tuesday. He is also one of the computer experts, the "sign painter", and "idea man". Dave Gillen visits on Tuesday to give assistance or answer questions regarding the computers. He has even been seen sweeping up some of our "crumbs" at closing. Ricky and Julie Boyer with mom Patti have brought "Ricky-made- cupcakes" for a birthday party.

It seems obvious that DCC has a "winning attitude" and knows that our potential for growth is a motivating force. I am very thankful for the time and resources that our members have given to Holy Grounds.

Welcome
We are blessed with many regular guests who attend each week and make DCC their church home. "Continuing Visitors" are those new people who have recently attended two or more Sundays, or have been attending or visiting DCC regularly.

Continuing Visitors:
Dixie Deen; Elaine Keefer; Keely Duckworth; Jojwan McCleod; Christina Allen

website
If you have not stopped by the DCC website recently, click on over. A significant update was made on Monday, November 12. There are photos of Trunk or Treat. You can access them from snapfish.com. You will need a username and a password, but it only takes a few seconds to get registered. There are 19 photos online from our fall festival, which was Saturday, October 27.

Remember, church leaders can find important documents on the download page. Additionally, all of Rev. Coats' sermons can be found on the front page now.

Also, don't forget to visit the online calendar. It enables you to send yourself reminders of upcoming events, send invitations to friends and colleagues and download the church schedule to your personal computer. You can find all of the church activities, birthdays and anniversaries on that calendar, as well as the scheduled Elders, Deacons and Connectors for each Sunday.

Also, there is a place to submit prayer requests.

For website suggestions, please e-mail the church office.

Feel free to forward this e-mail on. If you are the recipient of a forwarded e-mail, and you have more questions about anything you see here or about Disciples Christian Church, send an e-mail to brian@dccplano.com.
