A Week Before the NBA Finals - The DCC Finals
Bob Knoll

DCC got a head start on all of the basketball excitement in the Dallas area last weekend with the third annual Bob Knoll All-Star Basketball Camp.

About 60 youth from second grade to high school spent two days learning fundamentals. More importantly, they learned to strive to be the best at whatever they do.

At the end of the camp, awards were given for most enthusiasm and most spirit. All campers received a free basketball and t-shirt.

Special Olympics coaches based in Lewisville brought over about 15 youth. Awards and prizes were donated by Nike and TCU Basketball.

"Basketball Camp 2006 was a huge success!" Bob Knoll, pictured above, said. "The contributions and assistance from the Disciples Christian Church Community made the experiences for the campers exciting and memorable. Words cannot express the appreciation Sharon and I have for ALL of you that contributed your passion, enthusiasm, time, energy and finances to help make camp fun for the youngsters. We would like to thank everyone for your part in Basketball Camp 2006."

Kick off the summer with a unique special event:

Ice Cream Social and Concert featuring the “9:45 Band" | THIS Friday
June 9 at 7 pm

This is an excellent laid-back event to invite your friends and neighbors to ... The 9:45 Band leads the Contemporary service at Fellowship United Methodist Church in Trophy Club. They play adult contemporary and folk music.

We'll begin in the fellowship hall at 7 pm and move into the sanctuary for the concert around 8 pm.

The beautiful baby grand piano in the choir loft is on loan from John Dysart. Until he is able to move it to Minnesota, he has offered to share it with us so that it may be cared for and enjoyed. We had to wait and let it acclimate before tuning, which was accomplished this week. Now that it has been tuned, you can expect to hear, and, I hope, enjoy, the baby grand a lot more in the coming weeks!

Remember that you can come say "hello" to John Dysart and the Nabors at the Cast of Bronze concert. John will be flying back to participate in their tour, which ends in Richardson at 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 15th at St Barnabas Presbyterian Church at 1221 W. Belt Line Road. For more information on this professional handbell ensemble, you can go to www.castofbronze.com.

Choir schedule:
The chancel choir will sing until Sunday, June 18th, and then begin a summer break. We will resume rehearsals on Wednesday, August 9 at 6:30 p.m.

Summer specials:
If you are interested in performing special music during the summer, please contact Laura Young at 972-744-9941.

Keyboardist search:
Our search is underway. If you know of someone who is talented and interested, they may apply by giving a resume to Jan in the office, or submitting a resume on-line through our DCC website.

The Richardson Community Band presents free family- friendly concerts every two weeks during summer. The next one takes place on Sunday, June 11th at 7 p.m. at the lawn of the Richardson Civic Center (on Arapaho, just West of 75). Concert-goers are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets. Picnic dinners are welcome too. For more information, please see www.richardsoncommunityband.org.

Dani Loving-Cartwright
DCC is blessed to welcome Rev. Dani Loving- Cartwright to the pulpit this Sunday, June 11. Dani is the Regional Minister, representing over 400 churches in the eight areas of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in the Southwest.

Dani's message is entitled, "Aren’t We Pentecostal?” and her scripture is Acts 2:1-2; 38-47. Don't miss this special speaker!

VBS
Even if you can't be at DCC July 17-21 from 9:30 am- 12:30 pm, there are still three ways you can directly help make Fiesta! a smashing success!

  • Donate or lend supplies - Check out the new bulletin board in the Atrium ... VBS leaders are using that as a collection point for supplies.
  • Decorating ... Join us on Sunday, July 16 as we transform DCC into a Fiesta!
  • Prayer ... Be in church on Sunday, July 16 as we commission and pray for all VBS volunteers. Then, return the following Sunday, July 23, for a slide- show and special music celebrating Fiesta!

Also, to register a young person for VBS, simply print out and return a registration form to the DCC office! It could not be more simple!

Rev. Brian Coats
If you've been around DCC anytime lately, you probably know we just wrapped up a message series entitled, "Church Out of the Box." Well, I've got some more things to say about that ...
Hurricane
Now that the Interfaith Partners Habitat home is complete, DCC is turning its attention to the next hands-on service project.

With the coming of summer, Hurricane Season 2006 has officially started. As we've learned the last two years, unfortunately it's not "if" a hurricane will strike, but "when." This year, DCC is going to get a head- start on the aid.

During June and July, we will be collecting Emergency Clean-up Buckets. The supplies in these buckets enable people to begin the overwhelming job of cleaning up after a flood, hurricane, tornado or other disaster.

You and your family are encouraged to prepare an entire bucket. The contents can be found on the Church World Service website; lists are also available in the coffee fellowship area of the DCC Atrium. Bring your bucket with you to worship on Sunday, July 30. Before sending them off to Church World Service, we will dedicate these buckets.

thank you
Dear Madam or Sir,

First let me apologize for the time it took to write and thank you for the generous gift of chairs which you all gave our church. It is times like these when churches are in financial difficulties and membership is low that a gift such as yours is very much appreciated. I must say that the chairs are very comfortable. Our members and others have commented on their beauty, at length.

Sincerely,
Lloyd B. Facen
Warren Avenue Christian Church

Dear Disciples Christian Church,

I sincerely wanted to thank you for your $100 donation to the A.H. Wilbur Walk-A-Thon. Your donation will be used to build a scholaship fund which will be distributed among several talented and college- bound students at our school. Thank you so much for making Adam Hurst's dream for studying theater a reality.

Sincerely,
Alex Branton

July 4
On Tuesday, July 4, DCC will have a float in the Plano Independence Day Parade, and we need your help!

We’ll be preparing over 1500 water bottles THIS Sunday, June 11 and Sunday, June 25 after worship. If you can stay after for a little while to help us, it will make the work easier on everyone.

This is an excellent opportunity to offer our friends and neighbors a “cup of living water.” Join us as we reach out to as many Plano neighbors as possible!

website
If you have not stopped by the DCC website recently, click on over. The most notable new feature is an online calendar. It enables you to send yourself reminders of upcoming events, send invitations to friends and colleagues and download the church schedule to your personal computer. You can find all of the church activities for June on that calendar.

Also, there is a place to submit prayer requests and a new feature called "DCC TV," which is a video of our Sunday worship.

For website suggestions, please e-mail the church office.

Feel free to forward this e-mail on. If you are the recipient of a forwarded e-mail, and you have more questions about anything you see here or about Disciples Christian Church, send an e-mail to brian@dccplano.com.

The Mission of Disciples Christian Church
