An Important Morning
Disciples Christian Church

A Congregational meeting to vote on the new DCC Constitution, By-Laws and Operation and Procedure Manual is this Sunday, February 26 at 9 a.m. Copies of these documents were mailed to each DCC home on Wednesday, Feb. 8. Extra copies are available in the church office. The By-Law team has worked diligently, with much input, for over a year creating these. Highlights include the move from "committees" to "ministry teams," the creation of a church vision team and an emphasis on task-driven meetings. Join us as we continue celebrating "all things new" at Disciples Christian Church.

Kiley and Bob
The second fellowship gathering at the Coats’ home in Allen, is THIS Friday, February 24. Sponsored by the Pastoral Support Team, part of the evening will be set aside for sharing our hopes and goals for DCC, so come and be a part of the dreaming! You may even get a tour of Kiley's room, as Bob Clancy did! If you have not previously signed up, that's OK ... come anyway! There will be plenty of food and plenty of fellowship to go around!
Music Notes
Choir has resumed! If you are interested in singing with us, please join us at 8:30 on Sunday morning in the sanctuary. You do not need to read music to join us. If you can carry a tune in a bucket, I can supply the buckets! We will be singing in the Feb. 5th worship service. See you Sunday! Laura Young, Music Director, 972-744-9941.
Ash Wednesday
Ash Wednesday (from the Latin Dies Cinerum, meaning "Day of Ashes") is the first day of Lent. On this day, Christians focus intensely on their utter and complete sinfulness and the necessity of Christ's suffering and death to earn their salvation. Ashes are referred to many times in the Old Testament as a sign of sorrow, mourning, repentance, and morality (see 2 Samuel 13:19; Esther 4:1-3; Job 42:6; and Jeremiah 6:26). Many churches use ashes during Ash Wednesday worship as part of a rite called the Imposition of Ashes. According to this ancient custom, ashes (traditionally made by burning palm fronds used on Palm Sunday of the previous year) are mixed with a small amount of olive oil and applied to the forehead of each worshipper. This mark, in the sign of the cross, can be a powerful reminder of our depraved and sinful nature and the total dependence on God for forgiveness and salvation.

For Ash Wednesday, we will be joining with our friends at First Christian Church on Wednesday, March 1 at 6:30 p.m. for a special worship service. A combined choir will present special music, and Rev. Brian Coats will bring the message. Join us at FCC, 1501 Ave H.

Rev. Brian Coats
Before I came on the job "officially" in January, something important happened to me at DCC in December.
Habitat
Come be a part of a Habitat workday!

On Saturday, March 4, DCC will be sending a volunteer crew to work on framing a home for an in-need family. If you've never worked with Habitat before, it is a wonderful organization dedicated to ending worldwide substandard housing. They offer a "hand- up, not a hand-out." No construction experience is required - trained supervisors are on site, including our own Dave Bell. For more information about this workday, e-mail Dave.

Week of
Compassion Week of Compassion Special Offering: February 19 & 26

"When Was It That We Saw You Thirsty...." Matthew 25:37

Week of Compassion has supported soil and water conservation efforts in Nicaragua and Haiti to make clean mountain spring water accessible to small villages. Your support to Week of Compassion brings fresh water to thirsty communities around the globe. Jesus reminds us that it is in offering another water from our well that we find springs of living water. Roughly 1.1 billion people worldwide lack access to safe water. Please continue to give generously.

Grace for the Journey
Lent, a season of repentence, confession and self- examination, begins on Ash Wednesday and finishes on Good Friday. DCC will mark Lent with special readings, candles, prayers of confession and words of assurance during worship. Also, Rev. Brian Coats will be preaching a Lenten sermon series titled, "Grace for the Journey." We are called to reflect on our sinful condition during Lent, and we will. We'll also be reminded that God's grace is sufficient, and in our weakness, we are made strong. Come and hear more about this.

As a Lenten discipline, how about committing to be in church every Sunday in March and April?
