Disciples Christian Church

This Sunday, February 19, Rev. Brian Coats will be officially installed as the senior pastor of Disciples Christian Church. There will be special music, special prayers, and words of commitment from Rev. Coats and from the congregation. Also, Rev. Larry Ross, the North Texas Area Minister, will be bringing the message. Invite a friend or neighbor to this special occasion. Afterwards, stay and enjoy lunch!

first dinner
A good time was had by all at our first "get-to-know- you" on Friday, Feb 10. Our second gathering at the Coats’ home in Allen, is Friday, February 24. Sponsored by the Pastoral Support Team, part of the evening will be set aside for sharing our hopes and goals for DCC, so come and be a part of the dreaming! You can sign up and note your side dish at the Welcome Center in the Atrium.
Music Notes
Choir has resumed! If you are interested in singing with us, please join us at 8:30 on Sunday morning in the sanctuary. You do not need to read music to join us. If you can carry a tune in a bucket, I can supply the buckets! We will be singing in the Feb. 5th worship service. See you Sunday! Laura Young, Music Director, 972-744-9941.
Ash Wednesday
Ash Wednesday (from the Latin Dies Cinerum, meaning "Day of Ashes") is the first day of Lent. On this day, Christians focus intensely on their utter and complete sinfulness and the necessity of Christ's suffering and death to earn their salvation. Ashes are referred to many times in the Old Testament as a sign of sorrow, mourning, repentance, and morality (see 2 Samuel 13:19; Esther 4:1-3; Job 42:6; and Jeremiah 6:26). Many churches use ashes during Ash Wednesday worship as part of a rite called the Imposition of Ashes. According to this ancient custom, ashes (traditionally made by burning palm fronds used on Palm Sunday of the previous year) are mixed with a small amount of olive oil and applied to the forehead of each worshipper. This mark, in the sign of the cross, can be a powerful reminder of our depraved and sinful nature and the total dependence on God for forgiveness and salvation.

For Ash Wednesday, we will be joining with our friends at First Christian Church on Wednesday, March 1 at 6:30 p.m. for a special worship service. A combined choir will present special music, and Rev. Brian Coats will bring the message. Join us at FCC, 1501 Ave H.

Rev. Brian Coats
I can't believe I'm typing this ... perhaps it has to do with the fact that Lent is right around the corner, and Lent is a time of confession and repentence. Whatever the reason, I'm feeling called to reveal a bit of myself with you
Habitat
Come be a part of a Habitat workday!

On Saturday, March 4, DCC will be sending a volunteer crew to work on framing a home for an in-need family. If you've never worked with Habitat before, it is a wonderful organization dedicated to ending worldwide substandard housing. They offer a "hand- up, not a hand-out." No construction experience is required - trained supervisors are on site, including our own Dave Bell. For more information about this workday, e-mail Dave.
