A big thank you to everyone who helped make the new banners for the Atrium and Sanctuary. The following people participated in this labor of love and fellowship: Chuck and Nancy Bertschi, Nicole Coats, Donna Clancy, Fred and Nancy Hall, Judy Knowlton, Gena Hurst, Martha Pusko, Rebecca Crowell-Nilsen, and Lois Teed-Gillen.

Also, thanks to everyone who helped finish the decorating for Advent: Chuck and Nancy Bertschi, Rebecca Crowell-Nilsen, Fred and Nancy Hall, Brian, Nicole and Kiley Coats, and Sandy Snyder. It is wonderful to see the greenery, poinsettias, wreaths and new banners adorning our church!

Cantata
By Laura Young
Music Director

Christmas Cantata warm-ups on December 10:
Chancel Choir 8:30-9:30
Youth Choir 9:30 -10:00 (including rehearsal for Christmas Eve music and planning with Donna)

Calling all kids! (Ages 2 -10) If you like singing, ringing jingle bells, and Christmas music, please meet Laura Young in the preschool classroom at 10 a.m. on December 17th to learn a simple song that we will use to announce the start of worship at 10:30 a.m. Christmas Eve.

Oran Nabors mailed me an invitation to The Cast of Bronze Handbell Ensemble Christmas Concert. If you haven't heard them, you are missing an amazing musical treat. They are an auditioned, professional-level group who play a wide variety of music, from beautiful to funny to amazing selections. You can hear them at 7:30 Friday, December 15th, or 7:00 p.m., Saturday, December 16th at First Presbyterian Church of Richardson (310 La Salle Drive). Admission is free and all are welcome.

Rev. Brian Coats
Sunday night a group of us from DCC went to see "The Nativity Story."

To be completely honest, I've always been a bit leery of Bible-themed movies. More often than not, they are done on a low budget, and you can tell. This one, however, was produced and financed by New Line Cinema, and it included mainstream actors and production professionals.

I really enjoyed the movie. Two things in particular stood out for me.

Minister to Youth and Families

“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing it and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the LORD almighty will accomplish this.” Isaiah 9:6- 7

Isaiah prophesied then what we know today to be the coming of Christ, whose birth we celebrate this joyful season. As we make preparations during Advent to celebrate Christmas in the comfort of our homes, with our family and friends, let us remember those in the world who have yet to hear the good news proclaimed by Isaiah. Jesus came for ALL of US to give us a life full of hope, peace, joy and love. Invite those close to you seeking Christ to come and join you in worship and celebration and let us pray together that one day ALL may know the love, joy, hope and wonder of the Prince of Peace.

Grace and peace,
Donna

An official DCC congregational meeting is called for Sunday, December 17. The purpose of the meeting is to review and vote on the proposed 2007 church budget. The meeting will take place directly after worship. Members are encouraged to take part in this important event.

Mike’s Kids ... This collection supports children who have been abandoned or forced out of their homeland to a new country. You are invited to fill up Banana boxes with children’s clothing, child-sized underwear (new), toys (new or gently used) and food for Mike’s Kids in Los Fresnos, TX, a ministry in partnership with Southwest Good Samaritans Ministries. Disciples Christian Church is a collection point for donations to Mike’s Kids. Please drop off any of these items before Monday, December 11.

Memorials and Honorariums ... Also, this year instead of ordering poinsettias, we will be collecting $10 memorials and honorariums, and then send those funds to Southwest Good Samaritans Ministries, the organization that partners with Mike’s Kids. Envelopes are available in the Narthex. You may also call or e-mail the church office with your memorial and/or honorarium. As in previous years, all of the names will be noted in the church bulletin (at both Christmas Eve services).

Welcome
We are blessed with many regular guests who attend each week and make DCC their church home. "Continuing Visitors" are those new people who have recently attended two or more Sundays.

Holy Grounds is blooming! Perhaps you or someone you know could help with some items we are needing to complete the arrangement:

  • Good leather love seat
  • Small end table for lamp
  • Small apartment/hotel style refrigerator
  • Five-gallon water container (i.e. Culligan) with hot water capability
  • Small plain floor lamp
Thank you so much for helping the Evangelism team with this. See you at the coffee pot!
The vision of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), is to be a faithful, growing church, that demonstrates true community, deep Christian spirituality and a passion for justice. (Micah 6:8)

On December 17 and December 24, we will be taking a special offering in worship. This offering supports the many ministries of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), including the work of our own region - the Christian Church (DOC) in the Southwest. To read about some of the exciting things happening with Disciples, follow these links:

  • Thousands of Disciples have become a part of 10,000 Disciples Praying, a special prayer initiative that encourages Disciples and ecumenical partners to pray daily for the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and its leaders. To add your name to the list, follow the link.
  • The office of Disciples Volunteering is looking for 750 work groups between now and August 2008 to continue recovery work in the Gulf Coast.

website
If you have not stopped by the DCC website recently, click on over. A significant update was made on Monday, November 20. There are more photos, and church leaders can find important documents on the download page. Additionally, all of Rev. Coats' sermons can be found on a new message series page.

Also, don't forget to visit the online calendar. It enables you to send yourself reminders of upcoming events, send invitations to friends and colleagues and download the church schedule to your personal computer. You can find all of the church activities, birthdays and anniversaries on that calendar, as well as the scheduled Elders, Deacons and Greeters for each Sunday.

Also, there is a place to submit prayer requests and a new feature called "DCC TV," which includes the videos from the "Let's Grow" campaign.

For website suggestions, please e-mail the church office.

Feel free to forward this e-mail on. If you are the recipient of a forwarded e-mail, and you have more questions about anything you see here or about Disciples Christian Church, send an e-mail to brian@dccplano.com.
