Updated Prayer Requests
Welcome Donna!

Donna Atkinson is the new Minister to Youth and Families at Disciples Christian Church!

Donna joins the DCC staff officially this Sunday, August 6. It was at a sister Disciples of Christ church that she first sensed a call to ministry. She began the licensed ministry program of the North Texas Area in 2002, and received her license in April 2006.

"My call to ministry was awakened through the love, care and nuture of the members of my home church of Western Heights Christian Church in Garland for the last 19 years," she said. "They encouraged and helped me to channel my love for children and youth to serve the church as a youth sponsor, Sunday School/VBS teacher, youth/christian education ministry leader and ultimately to serve with CLER Ministries keynoting the DOC Southwest Region's Eighter's 'Created to Be Me' Sexuality and Spirituality Camps."

At DCC, Donna will be working closely with and ministering to children, youth and their families. She said she is very excited to begin.

"I am passionate about helping the people I meet and those I serve in ministry come to know God's amazing love through Jesus Christ," she said. "It has been an amazing journey and I'm excited that God led me to DCC to share our gifts in ministry together to reach out to share this Good News of God's love through Jesus Christ!

Installation of Officers
We invite you to join us for worship on Sunday, August 6 as we install our new leadership team. Special prayers, scripture readings and music will mark the occasion as the new leaders are charged to serve faithfully and passionately. If you have been called to be an Elder, Deacon, Board Officer, and/or Ministry Team Coordinator, be sure to be in attendance for this milestone event.

It's time for choir! The Chancel Choir resumes rehearsals on Wednesday, August 9th, from 6:30-7:30 p.m. in the choir loft. I am coming back with fresh ideas from choral workshops and some new music is being ordered! When we return, we will start fall music and make plans for our Christmas Cantata. Singers of all levels are welcome, and we welcome interested older youth along with our adults. You do not need to be able to read music (yet! as I say to the choir). Being a volunteer group, we have all levels, and we are all learning together and able to create a wonderful sound with the diverse singers we have. If you aren't sure if choir is for you, come try it out on a Wednesday and find out. Our purpose is twofold. Primarily, we exist to add our musical offering to the worship services. Secondly, we provide fellowship, learning, moral support, encouragement and fun to our fellow choir members.

The Hymn Poll has come to an end and I will be picking up the box on Sunday, August 6th. If you are regretting that you didn't get your favorite hymns (or other church songs) onto the list, you can email them to me this week at youngzoo@sbcglobal.net. Tell me your favorite hymn for Advent/Christmas, Lent/Easter, and General/"ordinary time," and your thoughts about any other types of music you would love to sing or hear in our worship time.

Wow! I was thrilled and inspired by all of the kids at VBS Fiesta! I also appreciated the children from DCC and FCC who came to sing our favorite Fiesta songs during the July 23rd worship. It was so good to have younger voices up front that I am working on plans to get our smaller ones singing at least seasonally this year. If you have a child or grandchild in preschool or elementary school and you think they might be interested in singing for church holidays this year, please call or email me to let me know. I will add them to my contact list.

Thank you! Laura Young, Music Director, 972-744-9941.

balance
For most of us, life is a balancing act – keeping all the plates spinning and all the balls in the air – and then having enough energy to start again tomorrow. This is especially true for many families as a new school year starts.

Is perfect balance really achievable? Certainly – if you’re a circus performer. If you’re not, join us at Disciples Christian Church, where we’re learning to survive and thrive in the imbalance we all call life!

This three-week series kicks off Sunday, August 13.

Youth Room
Youth and Family Night

Disciple
Registration begins this Sunday for two new adult Bible studies. Rev. Brian Coats will be teaching "Disciple" Bible studies on Sunday and Thursday evenings. One class will be for eight weeks, and the other will be for 36.

From the Disciple web site: "DISCIPLE aims at transformation - not just information - and calls on persons to submit themselves to examination by Scripture, to put themselves under the power of God’s Word, and to be changed by God’s Word. DISCIPLE invites persons to bring their experiences and struggles to the Scripture."

For more information, visit with Brian. You can sign up in the Atrium or via e-mail.

website
If you have not stopped by the DCC website recently, click on over. The most notable new feature is an online calendar. It enables you to send yourself reminders of upcoming events, send invitations to friends and colleagues and download the church schedule to your personal computer. You can find all of the church activities, birthdays and anniversaries for August on that calendar, as well as the scheduled Elders and Deacons for each Sunday.

Also, there is a place to submit prayer requests and a new feature called "DCC TV," which is a video of our Sunday worship.

For website suggestions, please e-mail the church office.

Feel free to forward this e-mail on. If you are the recipient of a forwarded e-mail, and you have more questions about anything you see here or about Disciples Christian Church, send an e-mail to brian@dccplano.com.
